Registration

Registration will take place from 10:00 onwards on Monday 8 October, in front of the MPE Neue Seminarraum. There is no registration fee.

Welcome Dinner

A Welcome Dinner, offered by ESO to all registered participants, will take place at the Gasthof Neuwirt in the centre of Garchingon Tuesday evening, October 9, from 19:30 to 22:30 hrs, starting with a welcome drink. If you do not plan to attend the dinner, please let us know.

Posters The poster papers will be on display in the Alte Seminarraum at the MPE for the duration of the workshop. The display area available per poster is around 120cm (high) x 100cm (wide) (paper size A1).
Internet and e-mail

PCs for Internet and email connection (only via a WEBMAIL service at the home institution) will be available in rooms 231/232 and room 114 (Council Room) in the ESO building. There will also be Internet cables and power strips to connect your laptops. Wireless LAN is available in most parts of the ESO building. Please bring your own wireless cards.

There will also be W/L available in the Poster Room (Alte Seminarraum) at MPE.

Geographical Location Munich is located in southern Germany. The ESO Headquarters are situated on the institute campus just north of the town of Garching, which is itself about 20 km north of Munich overview map; map of Garching with hotels), Map of Garching (high-res), Garching Local Information.
Munich offers excellent public transport. Garching can be reached by U-Bahn (underground) or in combination with S-Bahn (commuter train) and bus.
How to get to ESO/MPE The international airport of Munich (München) is located some 20 km north of Garching. From the airport, you can choose between the S-Bahn+Bus or taxi to go to your hotel. A taxi (recommended) to a hotel in Garching will cost approx. 30-35 €.

If you arrive by train at the Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), you can reach Garching by taking the S-Bahn to Marienplatz, then U-Bahn U6 in the direction of Garching-Forschungszentrum exiting at the U6 stop Garching or continue to the station Garching-Forschungszentrum to go to ESO.

Ismaning has a direct S-Bahn connection (S8) from the airport and the Hauptbahnhof.

Bus Transfer to the Workshop In the mornings and in the evenings of the workshop, there will be a bus transfer service between the center of Garching and MPE. See the workshop bus schedule here. Participants who do not want to use the workshop transfer busses can still use public transport.
Public Transport

See this Overview for an indicative summary, with some caveats, of public transport possibilities between the airport, Garching, ESO, Ismaning and Munich city centre. We recommend to consult the electronic time tables of the Munich tranportation network MVV, and of the German Railways .

Lunch We suggest that you have lunch at the canteen of the Max-Planck Institute, located about 2 minutes walk from the MPE (see map of the campus). The opening hours are:
Dining hall: Mo.-Th. 11:15 - 13:45; Fr. 11:15 - 13:30 Cafeteria: Mo.-Th. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 16:30; Fr. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 14:00.
Only cash is accepted. Prices for a main course range from about 4 to 6 Euros.
Bank service There are banks and cash-points in Garching. All main credit and debit cards are accepted (with PIN code). Please note that the banks may close during lunch time and have otherwise opening hours grossly different from shops.

Weather Munich weather in October can be warm and sunny or cool to cold and rainy. So you had better come prepared for either. Daytime temperatures are anywhere between 0-15 C. For more information, see WeatherOnline.
