Geographical location

Munich is located in southern Germany. The ESO Headquarters are situated on the institute campus just north of the town of Garching, which is itself about 20 km north of Munich (overview map; map of Garching). Munich offers excellent public transport. Garching can be reached by bus in combination with U-Bahn (underground) or S-Bahn (commuter train).

How to get there

The airport is called Munich/München Franz-Joseph Strauss. From the airport, you can choose between the S-Bahn+Bus or taxi to go to your hotel.

If you arrive by train at the Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), you can reach Garching by taking the S-Bahn to Marienplatz, then U-Bahn U6 to Garching-Hochbrück (see map below for connections), then bus 291 to Garching. Ismaning has a direct S-Bahn connection (S 8) from the airport and the Hauptbahnhof.

Local transport

In the mornings and in the evenings of the workshop, there will be a bus transfer service between the hotels and ESO. Here is the timetable (pdf file).

See the Overview Table for a summary of public transport possibilities between the airport, Garching, ESO, Ismaning and Munich city centre.

Please note that it is not advisable to bring a car to the workshop venue because of limited parking space.

More travel instructions can be found on the ESO Travel and Local Information pages.

Lunch

The closest canteen (5 minutes walk from ESO) is the canteen of the Max-Planck Institute (see map. Number 28 shows the canteen, and 37 the ESO Headquarters). Security

In order to reach the Max-Planck-Institute Canteen it is necessary to pass a security check at the gate on entering the Max-Planck-Institute area. The Workshop name badge together with an identity card has to be shown to allow access.

Bank service

There are banks and cash-points in Garching. All main credit and debit cards are accepted (with PIN code). Please note that the banks close during lunch time.

Weather

Munich daytime temperatures in late August are typically in the range 15-30 C. It can be rainy. For more information, see the Yahoo Munich weather forecast.

Excursion to the Bavarian Alps

On Saturday August 31st there will be an optional excursion to the Wendelstein. We depart from Garching at 9:00 sharp, and arrive at Wendelstein at 10:30. Once there, we take the cable car up (up at 11:00), have a visit of the observatory and lunch at the restaurant (ca.12:30 til 13:30).

Then we form 2 groups:

1) We can hike down: The descent is 930m, and takes about 2.5 hours. Good shoes and proper hiking clothes are needed, as well as water to drink. After arriving down at 16:00, we take the bus to the cafe.

2) We can take the cable car down (arriving down at 14:00) and hike to the cafe via Fischbachau/Birkenstein. The route is level, and the walk takes about 1.5 hours. Only normal walking shoes are needed.

All have coffee and cake there till ca. 18:00, then return to Garching, arriving ca. 20:00.

We have organized a bus for the journey to the Wendelstein and back. The cost of this is covered by ESO. All other expenses (cable car, restaurant, etc.) will be paid by the participants themselves.
