Technology Development in Chile in the ELT Era

  ESO Chile 12 August, 2025

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Chilean government, through its National Research and Development Agency (ANID), have signed a scientific and technological cooperation agreement for the construction and operation of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will be the largest optical/infrared telescope in the world. Through this agreement ESO and ANID will support projects related to the ELT with matching funds, for the development in Chile of highly specialized scientific and technical expertise in instrumentation and technologies related to astronomy over at least the next decade.

We are excited to announce the celebration of a meeting on “Technology Development in Chile in the ELT Era” to discuss ideas for future development of Chilean astroengineering projects related to Extremely Large Telescopes. This workshop will serve as kick off meeting to focus applications to the ANID Call IDeA I+D 2026, which will be complemented by ESO with funds for two positions, for a period of two years, at the premises of the institutions selected by ANID or at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile, for technical, engineering, and science personnel working on ELT-related projects.

The workshop will be held in person at the ESO premises in Santiago, Chile, with remote participation available via MS Teams.
