Geographical location

Munich is located in southern Germany. The ESO Headquarters are situated on the institute campus just north of the town of Garching, which is itself about 20 km north of Munich (overview map; map of Garching). Munich offers excellent public transport. Garching can be reached by bus in combination with U-Bahn (underground) or S-Bahn (commuter train).

How to get there

The airport is called Munich/München Franz-Joseph Strauss. From the airport, you can choose between the S-Bahn+Bus or taxi to go to your hotel.

If you arrive by train at the Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), you can reach Garching by taking the S-Bahn to Marienplatz, then U-Bahn U6 to Garching-Hochbrück (see map below for connections), then bus 291 to Garching. Ismaning has a direct S-Bahn connection (S 8) from the airport and the Hauptbahnhof.

Local transport

In the mornings and in the evenings of the workshop, there will be a bus transfer service between the hotels and ESO. Here is the timetable (pdf file).

See the Overview Table for a summary of public transport possibilities between the airport, Garching, ESO, Ismaning and Munich city centre.

Please note that it is not advisable to bring a car to the workshop venue because of limited parking space.

More travel instructions can be found on the ESO Travel and Local Information pages.

Lunch

The closest canteen (5 minutes walk from ESO) is the canteen of the Max-Planck Institute (see map. Number 28 shows the canteen, and 37 the ESO Headquarters). The opening hours are: Dining hall: Mo. - Thu. 11:15 - 13:45; Fr. 11:15 - 13:30. Cafeteria: Mo. - Thu. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 16:30; Fr.: 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 14:00. Only cash is accepted. Prices for a main course range from about 3 to 5 Euros.

Security

In order to reach the Max-Planck-Institute Canteen it is necessary to pass a security check at the gate on entering the Max-Planck-Institute area. The Workshop name badge together with an identity card has to be shown to allow access.

Welcome reception

A welcome reception will be held at ESO on Tuesday evening, 16 September, after the last session.

Conference dinner

The conference dinner takes place on Thursday evening, September 18, at 20:00 in the "Wirtshaus in der Au". It is located at the Lilienstr. 51 in downtown Munich (very close to the Deutsches Museum, see map) and easily reachable by S-Bahn (stop Isartor) or Tram 18 (stop Deutsches Museum/Ludwigsbruecke). A sufficient number of places is reserved for 20:00, but everybody has to get there and to order on his own. The cuisine is traditional Bavarian, and the dumplings (Knoedel) are famous. An extract from the Menu will be provided beforehand.

Social activity

The visit to the Muenchner Oktoberfest, Munich's famous beer festival, takes place on Saturday, September 20, at 12:00 in the Armbrustschuetzenzelt (tent no. 2 on the plan). It is also highly recommended to watch the "Einzug der Festwirte" (entrance parade of the brewers and beer tent landlords; see map, orange trail) around 11:00. Three tables, i.e. a total of 30 seats are reserved in the tent, but squeezing a little is always possible. The reservation fee for each participant amounts to 23 Euro for half a chicken, two liters of beer and some snacks.

Travel agent

The ESO travel agent Carlson Wagonlit, located at ESO Headquarters in room 203, can help if you need to make arrangements for your travel after the workshop. The opening hours are Monday-Thursday 9:00-16:30 and Friday 9:00-16:00.

Bank service

There are banks and cash-points in Garching. All main credit and debit cards are accepted (with PIN code). Please note that the banks close during lunch time.

Weather

Munich daytime temperatures in September are typically in the range 10-25 C. It can be rainy. For more information, see the Yahoo Munich weather forecast.
