THE RIGHT OF SEEING THE STARS: TOWARD SUSTAINABLE ASTRONOMY IN 2050

8 - 12 NOVEMBER 2027

GARCHING NEAR MUNICH, GERMANY

This workshop will be the first interdisciplinary workshop in astronomy to tackle environmental and social sustainability on multiple layers at such a large scale. Intended for both early-career researchers (including PhD students) and more senior researchers in leadership positions, the workshop aims to build a common understanding of what a sustainable future for astronomy means, along with practical recommendations to bridge the gap between community needs and decision-makers. During this three-day workshop, we will tackle the challenges posed by the rapidly evolving scientific horizon: the future of big data astronomy in a large language model and AI-driven ecosystem, the need for new success metrics, the design of complex observatories, and the need to include sustainability in them.

The workshop will combine classical talks and presentations with hands-on workshops, such as training attendees to contact their parliamentary representatives to demand the preservation of dark and quiet skies and natural resources or an introduction to Life Cycle Assessments.
