La Silla Observing Summer School, Santiago and La Silla Observatory, February 2 - 13, 2026

Important: We will spend at least 5 days at the La Silla Observatory, which is situated at an altitude of 2400 metres above sea-level in the Atacama desert. At the observatory we will work during night time, and the location of the different buildings requires physical activity, i.e. walking up and down a hill.

There is no medical doctor on site, and the next hospital is a 2.5 hours drive away. If you suffer from a serious medical condition (respiratory or heart problems, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes etc.), it is crucial that you consult your medical doctor before applying to the School, as you may not be allowed to travel to the observatory. This is for your own safety, and we hope for your understanding.

In case of questions feel free to contact us; all medical matters will be treated in strict confidence.

 

How to apply:

To apply to the La Silla Observing School, please fill in the registration form (below) AND arrange for a recommendation letter (preferably in pdf-format) to be sent by your advisor to ls26_school@eso.org before the registration deadline, indicating clearly your family name. ESO will not contact the advisor in case of a missing reference letter, and applications without a reference letter will not be considered.

By filling in the registration form you are registering to attend the La Silla Observing School. In order for ESO to organise the school, a set of personal data is required from each participant. Your personal data shall be processed only for the purposes of the organisation of the school, and shall not be used for any other purpose. In particular, ESO does not make available personal data and does not sell them for commercial purposes. Your personal data shall be kept as long as it is necessary for the organisation of the school, and shall be deleted after the school.

Important: The review of the applications will be done in two steps - the selection committee will do an initial ranking based on the following five entries only (your current status, title of thesis, summary of thesis project, CV and motivation) without knowing your name, gender, and the name of your advisor or research group. By doing so we want to minimize unconscious bias in the selection process. For this reason, please do not put your name (or the name of your thesis advisor) or anything that could reveal your identity into the entries 'Summary of your thesis project', 'CV' and 'Motivation'.

In the second step, the recommendation letters will be reviewed for highly ranked students. At this point, the committee will learn your identity.
