Data Handling and Products

ESO uses and supports data processing in three different ways:

  1. All incoming data from VLT telescopes are processed for quality control of observations. Some of this processing takes place as soon as data are taken directly at the telescope (quality control QC0). With a little delay, data are processed off-line to monitor the performance of the telescopes and instruments
  2. Data are then processed and then published in the archive for use by the astronomical cummity.
  3. ESO provides data reduction pipelines and envorments for users who want to process VLT raw data.

A list of Frequently Asked Questions on data reduction is available. The Science Data Quality group within the Backend Operations Department has the scientific oversight of data reduction tools. Questions should be directed to the User Support Department through https://support.eso.org.
