Thesis Topic: The Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect

Abstract

The Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect has shown to be a useful and complementary probe of the same hot gas seen in X-rays from galaxy clusters, groups, and filaments of the warm-hot intergalactic medium. Using in-hand data from either ALMA, MUSTANG-2 on the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope, NIKA2 on the 30-meter IRAM telescope, and others, the student will work on advanced tools to combine the data with archival X-ray observations from Chandra, XMM-Newton, and potentially NuSTAR. These tools can be used to probe ICM evolution and feedback physics. The student may also work on cosmology and astrophysics forecasts for advanced mm/submm instrumentation and platforms, such as upgrades to ALMA and AtLAST.
