The abstract submission and the registration for 'What was that? – an ESO workshop on planning follow up for transients, variables, and solar system objects in the era of LSST' is now open.

The goal of this meeting is to encourage coordination in the communities who study the variable, transient and moving objects of which the Vera C Rubin observatory's LSST will discover vast numbers, to figure out how best ESO's facilities can provide the necessary follow up.

The LSST and its public alerts (and 'brokers' and related systems for filtering these) will be introduced to a wider ESO audience, discuss how previous surveys of transients (e.g. PESSTO) have operated and what models are best for the LSST era, and provide an opportunity for the communities of researchers in these topics to come together to plan coordinated efforts. Coordination will be key to maximising the science that can come from combining LSST discoveries and the wide variety of detailed observations possible with ESO facilities. The purpose of this meeting is to provide a platform to explore collaboration and coordinated ESO programmes in the LSST era.

The workshop will take place at ESO headquarters in Garching, Germany, between the 22nd and 26th of January 2024. In person attendance is encouraged to facilitate collaboration building, but virtual attendance will also be supported. Further information is available.
