3 december 2020: To strengthen its cooperation with Chile, ESO provides and manages an annual fund that awards projects dedicated to the development of science research, technology and education in astronomy. The Joint Committee ESO–Chile 2020 has now selected 15 projects fitting these criteria, awarding a total of 460 million Chilean pesos (about €500 000). The funds will support postdoctoral programmes in astronomy at Chilean academic institutions, scientific visits for researchers, academic faculty positions, the construction of technological systems for astronomy, as well as educational programmes for the teaching and dissemination of astronomy. Created in 1996, the Joint Committee ESO–Chile brings together representatives of ESO and the Chilean Government, through the Energy, Science and Technology & Innovation Division (DECYTI) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREL), and with the participation of the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), and the Chilean Astronomical Society (SOCHIAS). 24 november 2020: M1, the main mirror of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), is moving closer to completion with the approval of the final design for its edge sensors, with its positions actuators also nearing this key milestone. The sensors and actuators are crucial to the optical quality and functionality of the giant 39-metre mirror. The ELT is planned to start operating later this decade in the Chilean Atacama Desert. The primary mirror on the ELT, M1, is composed of 798 hexagonal segments, made of a thin glass-ceramic material. To ensure the optical quality of the mirror, its segments have to work together to maintain the mirror’s shape, despite changes in the telescope's position and in external conditions, such as temperature, pressure and wind. 19 november 2020: Medan konstruktionen av ESO:s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) i Chiles Atacamaöken står still på grund av covidpandemin sker viktiga framsteg på andra håll. Under de senaste månaderna har designarbetet för kupolen avslutats och tillverkningen av kupolkomponenterna är i full gång. Under designprocessen för kupolen löstes ett flertal komplexa problem som är nödvändiga för att realisera världens största optiska teleskop i den extrema miljön i Atacamaöknen. Strukturen måste fungera felfritt och kräva minimal service, samtidigt som den ska motstå hårda vindar och jordbävningar. De senaste designillustrationerna visar hur kupolen kommer att se ut, och hur små men betydelsefulla ändringar har gjorts i den ursprungliga designen. Konstruktionen av ELT:s kupol och teleskopstruktur leds av det italienska industrikonsortiet ACe (Cimolia, Astaldi). 17 november 2020: En ny och bättre kalibrerad version av Venusobservationerna som gjordes med Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) i Chile är nu tillgänglig via ALMA science archive. De ursprungliga observationerna gjordes 2019 av Jane Greaves vid Cardiff University i Storbritannien för att försöka bekräfta tidigare observationer av fosfin i Venus molntäcke som utförts med James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). Upptäckten av fosfin rönte stor internationell uppmärksamhet och genererade en hälsosam vetenskaplig diskussion då olika forskarlag undersökte publikationen och den presenterade datan. ALMA-personalen korrigerade därefter en störande signal och mindre mjukvaruproblem som kan ha påverkat detektionen av fosfin, som kan ha uppstått av de svåra observationsbetingelserna som orsakades av ett så ljusstarkt objekt som Venus. Efter identifikationen av detta potentiella problem med datan togs det bort från ALMA science archive, och har nu ersatts av en bättre kalibrerad version. 6 november 2020: A major component of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), its first prefocal station or PFS-A, is now close to completing its final design review. With this milestone nearly reached, ESO has signed a contract with Spanish company IDOM for a second prefocal station, PFS-B. The two ELT prefocal stations, which are designed and manufactured by IDOM, are large structures measuring over 9 metres tall and each standing on supporting platforms, located on opposite sides of the telescope main structure. Working at the interface between the telescope’s five-mirror system and its instruments, they have a triple function: control the telescope mirror alignment (including the precise pointing on-sky of the telescope structure), ensure the segmented main mirror continues to act as one, and distribute light to the telescope instruments. 23 september 2020: 2021 års upplaga av en av våra mest populära produkter, ESO-kalendern, finns nu tillgänglig online i ESOshop och vid ESO:s Supernova planetarium och besökscenter. Kalenderns framsida pryds av ett fantastiskt stjärnlandskap kring ett relativt okänt objekt, Gum 15, en nebulosa där stjärnbildning pågår. På bilden ses också en av de närmaste supernovaresterna som uppstod för mellan 11 000 och 12 300 år sedan då en stjärna exploderade på 800 ljusårs avstånd. På månadsbilden för mars sträcker sig Vintergatans ljusa band över ALMA-antennerna på Chajnantorplatån. En av de närmaste stjärnbildningområdena, Orionnebulosan, pryder julis månadsuppslag, medan det 3 ton tunga glasämnet för sekundärspegeln i Extremely Large Telescope visas för september. 18 september 2020: The exceptional circumstances imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic led ESO to suspend science operations at its observatories in late March. We are now pleased to announce that minimal science operations have restarted at ESO’s Paranal Observatory, in Chile’s Atacama Desert, under strict health and safety measures. After carefully assessing the pandemic development and the logistic, technical and safety constraints associated with it, ESO started to ramp-up operations at Paranal, home to ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in early September. Ramping up has been gradual, with observations restarting on only two of the four VLT 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes (UTs). The two instruments now in operation are FORS2 on UT1, our most in-demand instrument, and UVES, a high-resolution spectrograph on UT2. 11 september 2020: The Royal Observatory Greenwich has announced the results of its hugely popular, global photographic competition, a yearly contest to find the most beautiful and spectacular visions of the cosmos. The winners of Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2020 will be showcased in the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition at the National Maritime Museum, opening to the public on 23 October 2020. ESO joined the competition in 2016 by contributing a judge and further spreading the word about the competition among its community. French photographer Nicolas Lefaudeux has outcompeted thousands of amateur and professional photographers from around the globe to win the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s title of Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2020. 25 augusti 2020: En grupp internationella experter från bland annat ESO har presenterat en ny rapport som beskriver praktiska åtgärder för att reducera de problem som stora satellitkonstellationer orsakar för astronomin. En av slutsatserna är att stora mängder ljusa satelliter i låg omloppsbana kring jorden på ett grundläggande sätt kommer att förändra optisk och nära infraröd astronomi och allmänhetens upplevelse av natthimlen. Rapporten beskriver en färdplan för observatorier och satellitoperatörer att arbeta tillsammans för att minimera de skadliga effekterna. Den första av de två huvudsakliga slutsatserna i rapporten är att satelliter i låg omloppsbana kring jorden påverkar forskning under skymning och gryning särskilt hårt, som sökningar efter jordbanekorsande småplaneter eller optiskt synliga gravitationsvågskällor. 21 juli 2020: ESO and the Centre for Astrophysics of the University of Porto (CAUP) are delighted to announce that Finnish student Meri Teeriaho is the winner of the summer AstroCamp 2020 prize offered by ESO. The camp received about 50 applications from 12 countries, most of these applications being from ESO member states. The ESO-supported summer AstroCamp is an academic programme devoted to astronomy and physics, organised by the Centre for Astrophysics of the University of Porto (CAUP). The camp will take place from 9 to 23 August 2020. This year, the camp is organised under special circumstances due to the global context. 15 juli 2020: Lördagen den 18 juli startar ESO guidade virtuella turer på engelska av La SIlla- och Paranalobservatorierna. Utan att lämna ditt hem kommer du att kunna besöka dessa astronomiikoniska platser och utforska ESO:s teleskop i Chile tillsammans med våra kunniga guider. Precis som med de visningar som normalt hålls på plats är dessa virtuella visningar kostnadsfria och öppna för alla. Vi besöker de stora teleskopen som Very Large Telescope (VLT) och ESO:S 3,6-metersteleskop på La Silla. Vi kommer också att kunna visa runt i de utrymmen som normalt är utom räckhåll för besökare, som VLTI:s interfermometriska tunnlar. 5 juni 2020: METIS, the powerful imager and spectrograph for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), has passed its Preliminary Design Review at ESO’s headquarters in Garching, Germany. METIS, short for Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph, will make full use of the giant main mirror of the telescope to study a wide range of science topics, from objects in our Solar System to distant active galaxies. METIS will be extremely well suited to study the life cycle of stars, from infant stars and planet-forming discs to older stars near the end of their lifetime. The ELT will be the largest optical to mid-infrared telescope on Earth when it starts operations towards the middle of this decade. With its 39-metre primary mirror and advanced adaptive-optics systems, it will have six times the resolution of the James Webb Space Telescope.
