Procedimientos de Emergencia
General Information
The LPO Safety office provides guidance and advice about safety matters at the observatory, while the emergency leader is responsable to organizing the emergency responses that occur on-site. Additionally, a paramedic handles emergencies in the hospital care area.
EMERGENCIES
In the event of an emergency, communication must be carried out through the fllowing channels:
- Via Radial on Channel 2
- Via Telephone to annez 4444
To ensure a quick response, priority should be given to using the radio. Extension 4444 should only be used when a radio is not accessible.
The notification will be carried out using the following code
CODE 1: Pre-hospital care
CODE 2: Fire
CODE 3: Hazmat emergency
CODE 4: Missing person
CODE 5: Earthquake
Any member of the staff can activate codes 1,2,3 abd 4 in case of an emergency. However, the CODE 5 activation (Earthquake) will be the exclusive responsability of the Emergency Coordinator.
The structure for activating an emergency through any medium will be as follows:
- Attention to frequency, request radio silence for code 1,2,3,4,5 (as applcable).
- Location (as a precise as possible).
- Situation occurring (as briefly as poosible).
EMERGENCY INFORMATION
PRE-HOSPITAL CARE
- In Case of a medical problem, the staff member, contractor or visitor affected should either go to the First Aid Station or should request the presence of the Paramedic, via radio or annex 444 declaring Code 1
- All medical-related decisions, including the decision to and how to transfer the onjured person to a hospital, will be taken only by the Paramedic in coordination with hte medical consultant.
- Of course, any patient has the right to choose his or her medical treatment or establishment, if it is not a critical situation.
- Workplace accidents require attention according to mutuality (suchs as: ACHS, Mutual, etc) in the case of local staff and contractors.
FIRE
- Don't tamper with smoke detectors
- Don't store flammable materials at your workplace
- Be familiar with the location and the use of fire extinguishers
- Be familiar with Emergency Exiits / Safety zones
- Don't smoke in high-risk areas
- When you see a fire, get out of a dangerous zone, notify via radio or annex 4444 declaring Code 2
- Use fire extinguishers to get out of a dangerous zone or help others to get out of the area, without risking your own life
- When a fire alarm activities, get out of the areas. notify or help others to get out. Go to the next safety zone
HAZMAT EMERGENCY
- An emergency conditions will be declared when a contaminated elemet affects the environment seriously, such as an oil spill, gasoline leak or similar. Advice via radio or annex 4444 declaring Code 3
- When you see this condition, get out of the dangerous zone immediately
MISSIN PERSON
- Missing person: Emeregency Level 3, resources internal, establishment of Emergency committee
- Missing person in more than 4 hours: Emergency Level 4, resources local / internal/ externa/ Emergency committee
EARTHQUAKE
- Indoors
- Bend and Cover
- Take shelter under a sturdy table or desk
- Cover your head and neck with your arms
- Stay away from windows, mirrors, shelves and objects that could fall
- Do not leave the building during the movement: it is safer to wait for it to pass.
- Outdoors
After the earthquake
- Evacuate with caution
- If the earthquake was strong and the building may be damaged, evacuate to a safe area.
- Use already established evacuation routes
- Don't use elevators
- Regrouping
- Go to the meeting point

Zone 1: Hotel main yard (Andaluz garden)
Zone 2: Hotel's rear access
Zone 3: Administration Building parking area
Zone 4: Area next to the GMS building ("sarcófago")
Zone 5: 1-m Telescope parking area
Zone 6: Dorms 1-2 parking area
