ESO-Jahresbericht 2020 jetzt verfügbar

Der ESO-Jahresbericht 2020 ist jetzt verfügbar. Er gibt einen Überblick über die vielen Aktivitäten der ESO im vergangenen Jahr. Aus dem Inhalt:

Die Auswirkungen der COVID-19-Pandemie auf die ESO, einschließlich der Sicherheitsmaßnahmen und der Auswirkungen auf die Mitarbeiterschaft

Das Herunterfahren der Observatorien in einen „sicheren Zustand“ im März und das Wiederhochfahren, das im September begann, wodurch wieder neue wissenschaftliche Daten vom Paranal, von APEX und La Silla hereinkamen

Arbeiten, die in den Laboratorien unter striktesten Sichheitsvorkehrungen fortgesetzt wurden und die wertvolle Beiträge zu Projekten lieferten, wie auch Fortschritte im Entwurf, der Software oder datenbezogen, wie auch zu anderen Projekten

Weitere Fortschritte, sowohl bei der ESO wie auch in der Industrie, bezüglich des Extremely Large Telescope, dem Paranal Instrumentation Program und den Entwicklungsprojekten zu ALMA

Wie die wissenschaftliche Auswertung der ESO-Daten während des Jahres weiterlief. Besonders zu nennen sind die Bestätigung der Vorhersagen der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie bezüglich der Präzession der Umlaufbahn des Sterns S2 um das supermassereiche Schwarze Loch im Zentrum unserer Galaxie. Zum selben Themenkreis gehörend: Der Physik-Nobelpreis des Jahres 2020 wurde für die Entdeckung dieses Schwarzen Loches an Reinhard Genzel (der mit der ESO an diesem Thema über 30 Jahre lang gearbeitet hat) und an Andrea Ghez (basierend auf Arbeiten, die vom W.M. Keck Observatorium unterstützt wurden) sowie an Roger Penrose für seine theoretischen Arbeiten zu Schwarzen Löchern vergeben

Die wichtigsten Meilensteine des Genehmigungsprozesses der Mittel für das Extremely-Large-Telescope-Bauprojekt durch den ESO Council – dazugehörig auch der erste Satz an Instrumenten und die Vorbereitungen von Paranal für den Betrieb des Teleskops – wie auch die Genehmigung des Coucils bezüglich der ESO-Strategie für das kommende Jahrzehnt

Wie die Interaktion mit der Wissenschaftsgemeinde und der Öffentlichkeit in Zeiten der Pandemie erfolgreich umgestaltet wurde, mit gut besuchten Online-Diskussionen, Online-Konferenzen und Online-Debatten, die der ganzen Wissenschaftsgemeinde offenstanden, sowie virtuellen Touren durch die Observatorien für die Öffentlichkeit
