ESO:n vuosikertomus 2020 on nyt saatavilla

ESO:n vuosikertomus 2020 on nyt saatavilla. Se esittelee yhteenvedon ESO:n monista vuoden aikana tehdyistä toiminnoista. Raportti pitää sisällään:
- COVID-19 pandemian vaikutus ESO:n toimintaan mukaanlukien turvatoimet ja sen vaikutus henkilökuntaan;
- Observatorioiden alasajo ”Safe State”-tilaan maaliskuussa ja syyskuussa alkanut toimintojen aloitus, joiden avulla Paranalin, APEXin ja La Sillan tiedetoiminnot pystyttiin aloittamaan uudelleen;
- Työn kuvaus, jota jatkettiin laboratorioissa tiukkojen turvallisuustoimenpiteiden mukaisesti mahdollistaen hankkeiden edistymisen sekä suunnittelun, ja ohjelmistokehityksen, datan keräämisen ja muut hankkeisiin liittyvät projektit;
- Erittäin suuren kaukoputken kehityksen edistyminen, Paranalin instrumentointiohjelman ja ALMA-kehityshankkeiden eteneminen sekä ESO:ssa että teollisuudessa;
- ESO:n keräämän datan tieteellinen hyödyntäminen oli edelleen runsasta vuoden aikana. Saatujen tulosten kohokohtana oli yleisen suhteellisuusteorian ennusteiden vahvistus koskien galaksimme keskipisteessä olevan supermassiivisen mustan aukon ympärillä olevan S2 tähden kiertoradan prekessiota. Tähän liittyen vuoden 2020 Nobelin fysiikan palkinto myönnettiin tämän mustan aukon löytämisestä Reinhard Genzelille (joka on työskennellyt ESO:n kanssa aiheen ympärillä jo yli 30 vuotta) ja Andrea Ghezelle (työstä, jossa W. M. Keckin observatorio on ollut mukana), sekä Roger Penroselle mustien aukkojen teoreettista työstä;
- Merkittävän virstanpylvään saavuttaminen ESO-neuvoston hyväksyessä Erittäin suuren teleskoopin rakennusohjelman täyden rahoituksen, johon sisältyy myös kaukoputken ensimmäiset instrumentit ja valmistelutoimet Paranalissa teleskoopin hallitsemiseksi ja käyttämiseksi. Merkittävä saavutus neuvoston hyväksyessä ESO:n ensi vuosikymmenen strategian;
- Miten tiedeyhteisön ja koko yhteiskunnan sitouttaminen tarkentuivat pandemian aiheuttamissa olosuhteissa. Toiminnoissa on ollut mukana verkkokeskustelufoorumeita, konferensseja ja keskusteluja, jotka ovat avoinna koko tiedeyhteisölle, sekä observatorioille on järjestetty virtuaalisia yleisökierroksia.
