Die ESO bleibt das produktivste bodengebundene Observatorium der Welt

Eine Analyse der Anzahl von begutachteten wissenschaftlichen Artikeln, die 2016 mit Daten der ESO-Teleskope und Instrumente veröffentlicht wurden, hat gezeigt, dass die ESO weiterhin das weltweit produktivste bodengebundene Observatorium ist. Astronominnen und Astronomen nutzten für 936 begutachtete Fachartikel im letzten Jahr Beobachtungsdaten von ESO-Einrichtungen.
Es gab 565 Artikel, die Daten verwendeten, die entweder mit den ESO-Einrichtungen des Very Large Telescope (VLT) oder des VLT Interferometer am Cerro Paranal gewonnen wurden. Die drei produktivsten VLT-Instrumente in Bezug auf die Veröffentlichungen sind UVES, FORS2 und VIMOS, die in 123, 109 bzw. 75 Artikeln genannt werden. Auch die Instrumente MUSE und SPHERE verzeichneten im Vergleich zum Vorjahr große Zuwächse. Daten der VISTA und VST Durchmusterungsteleskope am Cerro Paranal führten zu 93 bzw. 18 Fachartikeln.
Einrichtungen auf La Silla lieferten Daten für fast 200 Veröffentlichungen. HARPS bleibt mit 80 Artikeln La Sillas produktivstes Instrument.
Die Gesamtzahl von Artikeln, die auf europäischer Beobachtungszeit mit dem Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) basieren, lag für 2016 bei 129 bei insgesamt 305 solcher Artikel. 46 weitere wurden 2016 auf Basis von Beobachtungen mit dem Atacama Pathfinder Experiment Teleskop (APEX) mit ESO/APEX-Beobachtungszeit erstellt und damit 301 insgesamt. Der anhaltende Erfolg von ALMA und APEX trug maßgeblich zur Rekordzahl der ESO bei. APEX ist eine Kooperation zwischen dem Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie, dem Onsala Space Observatory und der ESO. Betrieben wird es von der ESO auf dem Chajnantor-Plateau in der chilenischen Atacama-Region.
Ein Vergleich der Anzahl der Fachartikel, die unter Verwendung von Einrichtungen an den großen Observatorien auf der gesamten Welt produziert wurden, führt die ESO-Observatorien an der Spitze der Liste. Beachten Sie, dass sich die Methoden, um diese Zahlen zu erhalten, von Observatorium zu Observatorium unterscheidet, so dass die Zahlen nicht direkt vergleichbar sind. Dennoch wird deutlich, dass die ESO andere bodengebundene Observatorium weiterhin deutlich übertrifft und auf Grundlage der verfügbaren Zahlen seine Führung vor dem NASA/ESA Hubble-Weltraumteleskop seit 2015 ausgebaut hat.
Diese Ergebnisse verdeutlichen wie wichtig die Beiträge der ESO für die astronomische Forschung sind. Die Publikationsstatistiken vermitteln eine Vorstellung dafür, wie viel wissenschaftliche Arbeit anhand der Daten von einzelnen Observatorien durchgeführt wird. Sie geben aber nicht deren weitergehenden Einfluss auf die Wissenschaft an.
Die Abbildungen werden in der jährlichen Basic ESO Publication Statistics [1] veröffentlicht, die von der ESO-Bibliothek veröffentlicht wird und mit der ESO Telescope Bibliography (telbib), einer Datenbank mit allen begutachteten Artikeln mit ESO-Daten [2], berechnet wird. Die ESO betreibt einen großen Aufwand für das Identifizieren von begutachteten Fachartikeln, die ESO-Daten verwenden, und geht davon aus, dass telbib im Wesentlichen vollständig ist. Im Jahr 2016 wurde das 13.000. Papier zu telbib hinzugefügt, veröffentlicht von einem ehemaligen ESO-Studenten, der Daten aus dem X-Shooter- und dem UVES-Instrument am VLT ausgewertet hat [3].
Interaktive Grafiken von ausgewählten Statistiken können außerdem online abgerufen werden. Diese Grafiken zeigen den gesamten Inhalt der telbib-Datenbank [4], die Einträge für Publikationen seit 1996 bis heute enthält. Die Einträge können verwendet werden, um die Publikationshistorie zu untersuchen, wozu auch die Entwicklung wissenschaftlicher Artikel mit Daten von ESO-Instrumenten sowie die Verwendung von archivarischen Daten zählt.
