Workshop Announcement: AtLAST Science Workshop, Royal Observatory Edinburgh, September 10 - 13, 2018

As a followup to the AtLAST Technical workshop held at ESO in January 2018, the AtLAST organisers are pleased to announce a science case development workshop to be held at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh in September 2018.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is currently the world’s most sensitive telescope operating at 0.3 to 3 mm (and will soon be extended to 10 mm).  However, as an interferometer, its mapping speed for large areas is limited, while the largest angular scales it can access are limited to roughly an arcminute at 3 mm.  This limit is even more stringent at shorter wavelengths. Further, existing submm/mm single dish facilities are not expected to remain competitive beyond 2030. We have therefore begun a two-year effort concerning the scientific merit for – and technical implementation of – an Atacama Large Aperture Submm/mm Telescope (AtLAST). 

The goal of this workshop is to bring the community together to create a focused, and comprehensive science case for a 50 m class telescope near the ALMA site.  Those planning on attending the workshop should join the science sub-group(s) listed on the science working groups page that they will be making contributions to before, during, and after the workshop.

Workshop venue: Higgs Centre for Innovation, at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh

Workshop size: maximum of 80 participants

Workshop fee: £50 for staff/faculty, £25 for students/post-docs  plus workshop dinner (to be confirmed)

Accommodation:  The Observatory is a brisk 20 minute walk (uphill!) from the closest accommodations. Those with mobility issues should consider making the journey by taxi (there is no public transport to the top of the hill).
