I primi passi di una stella bambina
La potenza dell’ Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) svela due immensi getti dall'aspetto granuloso e dalla simmetria quasi perfetta, costituiti da gas denso che proviene da una singola sorgente al centro di quest’immagine. All'origine di questi getti si trova una stella estremamente giovane - chiamata protostella - che sta iniziando il suo lungo viaggio per diventare una stella molto simile al Sole.
La stella bambina, conosciuta come CARMA-7, e i suoi getti si trovano approssimativamente a 1400 anni-luce dalla Terra, nell’ammasso di stelle Serpens South star cluster. Questo denso ammasso, che si trova ovviamente nella costellazione del Serpente ospita più di 30 protostelle che nascono in prossimità del nostro sistema solare, fornendo agli astronomi un magnifico laboratorio per studiare le interazioni tra le stelle e il loro ambiente.
I primi passi della vita di una stella non sono ancora ben conosciuti, ma gli astronomi pensano che questi getti opachi e dall'aspetto globulare siano causati da esplosioni periodiche di gas, espulsi a tremende velocità da CARMA-7 nelle regioni circostanti. Queste esplosioni sono innescate dal materiale che cade sulla protostella da un disco orbitante. I getti, allontanandosi dalla stella bambina, entrano in collisione con il materiale interstellare che li rallenta e li diffonde. Un giorno, questo materiale potrebbe collassare e formare un’altra generazione di stelle.
