Les premiers pas de l'enfance d'une étoile
La puissance d’ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) révèle deux immenses jets ridés de gas dense presque parfaitement symétriques qui émanent d’une seule source au centre de cette image. A leur origine se trouve une très jeune étoile - appelée une proto-étoile - qui est le commencement d’un long voyage pour devenir une étoile comme le Soleil.
La proto-étoile, connue comme CARMA-7, et ses jets se trouve environ à 1400 années-lumière de la Terre à l’intérieur de l’amas d’étoiles du Serpent du Sud. Cet amas dense dans la constellation du Serpent abrite au moins 30 proto-étoiles qui naissent proche l’une de l’autre, ce qui fournit aux astronomes un laboratoire parfait pour étudier les interactions entre les étoiles et leur environnement.
Les premiers pas dans la vie d’une étoile sont encore mal connus, mais les astronomes concluent que ces jets granuleux de poussière sont causés par des explosions périodiques de gas expulsé à des vitesses phénoménales par CARMA-7 dans ses environs. Ces explosions sont déclenchées par le matériel qui tombe sur la proto-étoile depuis un disque en orbite. Lorsque les jets voyagent à haute vitesse à partir de l’étoile, ils entrent en collision avec le matériel interstellaire, ce qui les ralentit et les diffuse. Un jour, ce matériel pourrait s’effondrer et former une nouvelle génération d’étoiles.
