Ett extremt stabilt fundament
Konstruktionen av världens största öga mot himlen, ESO:s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), går framåt! Efter en betydande fördröjning av arbetet under COVID-19-pandemin, inklusive nästan ett års total nedstängning av byggarbetsplatsen, återupptogs byggnationen i mitten av förra året. Denna bild från januari 2022 visar att grunden för det 39 m stora teleskopet har lagts, vilket tar oss ett steg närmare målet att avslöja universums djupaste mysterier.
De första delarna av ELT:s spektakulära kupol har nu också tagit form. Bygnaden blir omkring 80 meter hög, 88 m i diameter och får en area motsvarande en fotbollsplan. Till vänster i bild ses byggnadsställningar och den första formsättningen av kupolens väggfundament. Väggen omges av en cirkulär supportbyggnad vars betongfundament är i det närmaste klart. Elektriska, värmereglerande och hydrauliska stationer för att driva ELT kommer att placeras här. Hela denna struktur kommer att vila på vibrationsdämpare som redan är installerade, vars syfte är att skydda byggnaden och teleskopet mot jordbävningar och andra vibrationer.
Framför kupolen, vid dess framtida entré, ses ett djupt kvadratiskt hål som kommer att förses med ett torn för att testa teleskopets M4-spegel. Denna spegel är en fundamental del av ELT:s adaptiva optiksystem som kommer att deformeras i mycket snabb takt för att korrigera för turbulensen i jordatmosfären, liksom för vibrationer orsakade av vinddrag och teleskopets egen rörelse. M4-spegeln kommer att vara den största adaptiva spegeln som någonsin konstruerats för ett teleskop och nyckel för att ESO:s ELT ska erhålla skarpa bilder av universum.
