Se dará inicio a la construcción de Residencia de ALMA
Se adjudica contrato para la construcción del nuevo hogar para el personal y visitas oficiales.

El contrato para la construcción de la Residencia del Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) ha sido adjudicado al consorcio L y D - Axis, compuesto por las empresas Constructora L y D S.A. y Axis Desarrollos Constructivos S.A. Ambas son empresas chilenas, con amplia experiencia en la construcción de edificios residenciales dentro del desafiante entorno que presenta el norte de Chile.
La Residencia de ALMA será el nuevo hogar para el personal y visitantes de las instalaciones. Tanto el perfil del edificio como el color exterior de este importante proyecto arquitectónico se diseñaron para armonizar con la topografía, el medio ambiente y el paisaje del lugar de emplazamiento de ALMA. El diseño se encargó a los arquitectos Kuovo & Partanen de Finlandia y, posteriormente, se adaptó al mercado chileno por la empresa de arquitectura Rigotti & Simunovic Arquitectos de Chile.
Desde los inicios de la construcción de ALMA, en 2008, con la entrega de la primera antena (eso0849), el personal y visitantes han vivido y se han hospedado en contenedores temporarios, ubicados en el campamento de base, denominado Centro de Apoyo a las Operaciones (OSF por sus siglas en inglés), el punto focal de las actividades de Ensamblaje, Integración y Verificación de las antenas. El OSF se encuentra a una altura de 2900 metros y a unos 15 Kms de distancia del camino público más cercano; el pueblo más cercano es San Pedro de Atacama.
La construcción del conjunto ALMA ha sido la primera prioridad hasta ahora, siendo la Residencia del OSF el último contrato de gran envergadura pendiente.
Los trabajos especificados en el contrato comenzarán a principios del 2015 y se espera que tardarán 18 meses. En vista del inhóspito medio ambiente, la ubicación remota y el trabajo en turnos (tanto de día como de noche) que realiza el personal de ALMA, la Residencia fue diseñada para proporcionar un ambiente agradable, dentro del sitio mismo, tanto para el personal como para las visitas provenientes de alrededor de 20 países de todo el mundo.
La Residencia consta de dos zonas principales: áreas de uso común y dormitorios. El diseño utiliza un concepto modular, con el fin de poder proporcionar hospedaje a un mayor número de personas cuando sea necesario. Inicialmente, habrán 120 habitaciones, que se extenderán a través de seis edificios.
Las áreas de uso común incluyen instalaciones para el tiempo libre, tales como biblioteca, salón, spa y gimnasio, piscina, sauna y espacio para asados. También se instalará una cocina y comedor, que podrán atender a la mitad de los residentes al mismo tiempo.
