Die ESO bleibt das produktivste bodengebundene Observatorium der Welt

Eine Studie über die Anzahl von begutachteten wissenschaftlichen Artikeln, die 2014 mit Daten der ESO-Teleskope und Instrumente veröffentlicht wurden, hat gezeigt, dass die ESO weiterhin das weltweit produktivste bodengebundene Observatorium ist. Astronomen nutzten für 864 begutachtete Fachartikel im letzten Jahr Beobachtungsdaten von ESO-Einrichtungen, was dem Allzeithoch von 2012 entspricht. Die Zahl der Artikel, die 2014 mit ESO-Daten veröffentlicht wurden, war sogar weiterhin etwas höher als die veröffentlichten Artikel, deren Daten vom NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope stammen.
Fast 65% aller Fachartikel von 2014, die auf ESO-Daten basieren, verwenden Daten, die mit dem Very Large Telescope (VLT) oder der VLT Interferometer-Anlage aufgenommen wurden. Die produktivsten VLT-Instrumente aus Sicht der Artikelzahl sind UVES und FORS2, VIMOS steht an dritter Stelle. Zusätzlich zeigen GIRAFFE und SINFONI einen starken Aufwärtstrend.
Das VISTA-Durchmusterungsteleskop am Paranal-Observatorium hat im Vergleich zu 2013 Daten für fast doppelt so viele Artikel geliefert. FEROS, SOFI und WFI stiegen ebenfalls an, während HARPS das produktivste Instrument auf La Silla bleibt. Insgesamt wurden die Daten von Anlagen auf La Silla für über 260 Artikel genutzt.
Die Gesamtzahl von Artikeln, die auf europäischer Beobachtungszeit mit dem Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) basieren, lag bis Ende 2014 bei 104 und ist damit ebenfalls deutlich angestiegen.
Das Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX), das von der ESO auf dem Chajnantor-Plateau in der chilenischen Atacamawüste in einer Zusammenarbeit mit dem Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie und dem Onsala Space Observatory betrieben wird, hat einen leichten Anstieg der ESO-Publikationen gegenüber dem letzten Jahr gezeigt, wobei mehr als die Hälfte aller veröffentlichten Artikel auf Daten von Beobachtungszeit der ESO basieren.
Die Methoden, die zu diesen Zahlen führen, variieren zwischen den unterschiedlichen Observatorien, weshalb die Graphen nicht immer direkt miteinander vergleichbar sind. Die ESO übertrifft jedoch deutlich alle anderen bodengebundenen Observatorien und bleibt vor dem NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Diese Ergebnisse verdeutlichen wie wichtig die Beiträge der ESO für die astronomische Forschung sind. Die Publikationsstatistiken vermitteln eine Vorstellung dafür, wie viel wissenschaftliche Arbeit anhand der Daten von einzelnen Observatorien durchgeführt wird. Sie geben aber nicht deren weitergehenden Einfluss auf die Wissenschaft an.
Die Abbildungen werden in der jährlichen Basic ESO Publication Statistics [1] veröffentlicht, die von der ESO-Bibliothek veröffentlicht wird und mit der ESO Telescope Bibliography (telbib), einer Datenbank mit allen begutachteten Artikeln mit ESO-Daten [2], berechnet wird. Die ESO betreibt einen großen Aufwand für das Identifizieren von begutachteten Fachartikeln, die ESO-Daten verwenden, und geht davon aus, dass telbib im Wesentlichen vollständig ist.
Interaktive Grafiken von ausgewählten Statistiken können außerdem online abgerufen werden. Diese Grafiken zeigen den gesamten Inhalt der telbib-Datenbank [3], die Einträge für Publikationen seit 1996 bis heute enthält. Die Einträge können verwendet werden, um die Publikationshistorie zu untersuchen, wozu auch die Entwicklung wissenschaftlicher Artikel mit Daten von ESO-Instrumenten sowie die Verwendung von archivarischen Daten zählt.
