Vues multiples de la région de la nébuleuse de la Flamme, vues avec le DSS2, VISTA et APEX
Cette vidéo montre la nébuleuse de la Flamme et ses environs à différentes longueurs d'onde de la lumière.
La première image a été créée à partir de photographies en lumière visible faisant partie du Digitized Sky Survey 2 (DSS2). La deuxième image a été prise en lumière infrarouge avec le Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) de l'ESO à l'Observatoire Paranal au Chili. Enfin, des observations radio réalisées avec l'instrument SuperCam sur l'Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX), exploité par l'ESO sur le plateau de Chajnantor au Chili, sont ajoutées à l'image VISTA.
La nébuleuse de la Flamme est le grand objet sur la gauche. Le plus petit objet à droite est la nébuleuse à réflexion NGC 2023. L'emblématique nébuleuse de la Tête de cheval est visible en haut à droite de NGC 2023. Les trois objets font partie du nuage d'Orion, une structure gazeuse géante située entre 1300 et 1600 années-lumière.
Les observations radio faisaient partie du sondage APEX Large CO Heterodyne Orion Legacy Survey (ALCOHOLS), qui a étudié le rayonnement émis par le monoxyde de carbone (CO) dans le nuage d'Orion afin de cartographier les pouponnières d'étoiles. Les couleurs indiquent la vitesse du gaz, les nuages rouges à l'arrière-plan s'éloignant plus rapidement que les nuages jaunes au premier plan.
