L’ESO signe un accord pour l’instrument australo-européen MAVIS

Aujourd’hui, l’ESO a signé un accord avec un consortium international pour construire et faire fonctionner MAVIS, un instrument unique qui sera installé sur son Very Large Telescope (VLT), et fournira des images jusqu’à trois fois plus nettes que celles du Hubble Space Telescope. MAVIS s’attaquera à un éventail de questions de recherche, depuis comment les premières étoiles se sont formées il y a 13 milliards d’années jusqu’à comment la météo change sur les planètes et les lunes du système solaire.

« MAVIS sera un instrument puissant qui servira à un très grand nombre de projets-clé en science », explique François Rigaut, professeur à l’Australian National University, et qui est responsable du consortium pour MAVIS. « Cela inclura des observations de notre propre système solaire, ainsi que des planètes qui orbitent d’autres étoiles, et la physique de la formation d’une étoile, de la Voie Lactée jusqu’aux premiers amas stellaires de l’Univers. »

MAVIS, qui est l’acronyme de Multi-conjugate-adaptive-optics-Assisted Visible Imager and Spectrograph, produira des images plus nettes que les télescopes spatiaux en fonction actuellement, en retirant le flou causé par les turbulences de l’atmosphère terrestre. Pour cela, l’instrument fera plein usage du sophistiqué Adaptive Optics Facility du VLT, qui a un guide laser stellaire et un miroir adaptatif qui peut être déformable des centaines de fois par seconde pour corriger le flou atmosphérique. MAVIS inclura deux miroirs encore plus adaptatifs et d’autres systèmes pour mieux corriger ces déformations. La capacité de fournir des images corrigées de la gamme des longueurs d’ondes visibles, sur un large champ de vue, c’est ce qui fait de MAVIS un instrument unique en son genre. Cela veut aussi dire qu’il sera capable d’observer de très pâles objets distants.

Le consortium MAVIS est mené par l’Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO), avec le National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) en Italie étant un partenaire majeur ; le Laboratoire d’Astrophysique (LAM) en France et l’ESO font aussi partie du consortium. MAVIS est conçu par deux instituts australiens du consortium AAO — l’Australian National University et Macquarie University — représentant un tournant majeur dans la relation grandissante entre l’ESO et l’Australie.

L’ESO et l’Australie ont commencé un partenariat stratégique de 10 ans en 2017, partenariat que la communauté astronomique australienne a accueilli avec enthousiasme. « MAVIS est le résultat d’une collaboration fantastique et montre le potentiel que l’Australie détient en devenant un état-membre de l’ESO,  de même que pour l’ESO », déclare Richard McDermid, scientifique du projet et professeur associé à Macquarie University. « Cela démontrera que l’Australie peut non seulement participer à la vie scientifique de l’observatoire, mais peut aussi être un joueur central dans son aide à l’ESO à maintenir son leadership à fournir des instruments uniques et compétitifs. » En retour de la construction de MAVIS, le consortium sera garanti de temps d’observations avec l’instrument, et d’une contribution financière de l’ESO pour son matériel.

Les prochaines années représentent un moment très excitant pour l’astronomie. « Depuis l’espace, avec des télescopes comme le James Webb Space Telescope, et avec des équipements terrestres comme l’Extremely Large Telescope de l’ESO, les astronomes exploreront l’Univers encore plus en profondeur que jamais, » dit Robin Arsenault, manager de MAVIS à l’ESO. « En fournissant des données du spectrum visible, MAVIS est unique et complémentaire à ces futurs grands équipements, qui sont ciblés sur l’infrarouge proche. »

MAVIS sera installé sur le VLT Unit Telescope 4 (Yepun) à l’observatoire de l’ESO à Paranal au nord du Chili, et devrait commencer à fonctionner en 2027.
