ESO–Chile yhteiskomitean myöntämät rahoituspäätökset

Vahvistaakseen yhteistyötään Chilen kanssa ESO ylläpitää ja hallinnoi vuosittain rahastoa, joka tukee tieteen tutkimuksen, teknologian ja tähtitieteen koulutuksen kehittämishankkeita. ESO—Chile 2020 yhteiskomitea on nyt valinnut 15 hanketta, jotka täyttävät hakukriteerit, ja niihin on myönnetty rahoitusta yhteensä 460 miljoonan Chilen peson edestä (noin 500000 euroa).
Varoista tuetaan Chilen akateemisten instituutioiden tähtitieteen tutkijatohtoreita, tutkijavierailuja, tiedekuntien tehtäviä, tähtitieteen teknisten järjestelmien rakentamista sekä tähtitieteen opetuksen ja siitä tiedottamisen koulutusohjelmia.
Vuonna 1996 perustettu ESO—Chile yhteiskomitea kokoaa yhteen ESO:n ja Chilen hallitusten edustajat ulkoasiainministeriön (MINREL) energia-, tiede- ja teknologia- ja innovaatio-osastojen (DECYTI) kautta sekä Chilen kansallisen tutkimus- ja kehitysviraston (ANID) ja Chilen tähtitieteellisen seuran (SOCHIAS) toimintojen kautta.
ESO—Chile yhteiskomitea on säännöllisesti edistänyt tähtitieteen ja siihen liittyvien teknologisten tieteenalojen kehittämistä kilpailukykyisten rahoitusten avulla. Komitea arvioi vuosittain useita ehdotuksia, joita myönnetään sekä julkisille että yksityisille akateemisille laitoksille, että niihin liittyville laitoksille koko Chilen alueella.
