Fond på €17 millioner støtter 170 banebrydende projekter indenfor billedbehandling og sensorer

Blandt de udvalgte er projekter som med brug af ESOteknologi giver sociale fremskridt

ATTRACT er et Horizon 2020 projekt for forskning og innovation, iværksat af den Europæiske Union, og med opbakning af et konsortium på 9 partnere, herunder ESO. Nu annonceres 170 banebrydende ideer, som hver modtager €100 000 med det formål at de skal udvikle teknologier, som vil have potentialet til at ændre vores samfund. Blandt de udvalgte forslag er projekter, som udnytter ESOs astronomiske ekspertise til at skabe sociale fremskridt.

 

De udvalgte projekter, som får startfinansiering, er hentet fra en pulje på mere end 1200 forslag fra forskere og udviklere indenfor forskningsrelaterede og industrirelaterede organisationer over hele Verden. Det er en uafhængig kommitte, Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I), som har evalueret forslagene, og udvalgt dem, som nu får de €100 000 i startpenge.

"Vi har udvalgt 170 banebrydenede ideer, som er valgt ud fra en kombination af videnskabelig værdi, muligheder for innovation og en potentiel indvirkning på samfundet," forklarede Sergio Bertolucci, som er formand for ATTRACT’s R&D&I Committee. "Ideen er at accelerere udviklingsprocessen for gennembrudsteknologier med det formål at søge løsninger på nogle af nøgleproblemerne i samfundet."

ESOs rolle som partner i ATTRACT-konsortiet afspejler vores fortsatte forpligtelse til at bruge astronomiske tekniske løsninger til at adressere sociale udfordringer. Følgende udvalgte ATTRACT-projekter viser nogle af de samfundsmæssige anvendelser af ESOs astronomiske og tekniske ekspertise:

3D-CANCER-SPEC bruger astronomiens teknikker til kampen imod cancer, som er en af de hyppigste dødsårsager Verden over. Projektet, som koordineres af Martin Roth fra innoFSPEC ved the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik, Potsdam, kommer til at kombinere ekspertviden fra to partnere, som er involveret i udviklingen af det nytænkende instrument MUSE , som er monteret på ESOs Very Large Telescope. Resultatet skal være et designstudie til en billeddannende spektrograf, som vil kunne anvendes ved kliniske cancerundersøgelser.

Spektroskopi er en effektiv teknik, som kan bruges til at bestemme sammensætningen af et objekt ud fra det lys, som det udsender, uanset om lyset kommer fra et himmellegeme eller fra en jordisk persons krop. Cancervæv adskiller sig tilstrækkeligt fra sundt væv til at man kan skelne det ved hjælp af  Ramanspektroskopi — og det lover godt for at man kan undgå at tage vævsprøver fra kroppen. Til nu er det eftervist, at teknikken fungerer i princippet, men det har taget timer af foretage optagelserne, og det er alt for længe til, at metoden er brugbar i praksis. Forskerholdet planlægger at bruge en speciel teknik kaldet integrafeltspektroskopi for at gøre registreringerne hurtige nok til kliniske anvendelser, og det er netop den teknik, som MUSE nu anvender; udviklet for at løse et særligt problem indenfor astronomisk billedoptagelse.

Projektet 'Single Photon Visible Light Image Sensors for Science and Technology' skal lægge et fundament for betragtelige ændringer i billeddannelse ved lave lysstyrker. Projektet koordineres af Konstantin Stefanov fra Open University i samarbejde med ESOs detektorspecialist Mark Downing. Formålet er at udvikle detektorer, som kan danne billeder ud fra enkeltfotoner i synligt lys. Det vil kunne bruges til adaptiv optik og spektroskopi og billeddannelse ved meget svage lysstyrker. Udbyttet fra den slags sensorer vil udelukkende være begrænset ved fotonoptagelsen i halvledere, og selve lysets kvantenatur. Ved at registrere og tælle hver eneste foton uden også at registrere ekstra støj, vil den slags detektorer give os de bedst opnåelige muligheder for billeddannelse, og dermed vil vi kunne se og opdage det ukendte.

"Det er vidunderligt at se, hvordan den teknologi, som bruges i ESOs teleskopinstrumenter kan anvendes indenfor et helt andet område," kommenterede Andrew Williams, som er ESOs repræsentant i ATTRACTs bestyrelse. "Det er et centralt mål for ATTRACTprojektet, som uddeler startmidler til den slags ideer, og som viderefører den lange tradition for at bruge grundvidenskabelige opdagelser til at udvikle innovative teknikker til gavn for samfundet."

Ud fra de 170 udvalgte ideer, som rækker fra augmented reality til smarte sensorer og apparater, vil der bliver udviklet banebrydende teknikker, som kan forbedre kliniske diagnoser, helbredstjek og personligt udviklede behandlingsformer for sygdomme som cancer, Alzheimers eller malaria, såvelsom problemer med hjerte og nervesystem.

Tværvidenskabelige forskerhold, udviklere og firmaer fra hele Kloden kommer også til at udvile nyskabende sensorer og apparter, som vil bevirke nybrud i mange andre sektorer med et højt markedspotentiale. Blandt de nye teknikker kan man forudse smarte målere til miljøovervågning, grønne løsninger på klimaforandringer, avancerede muligheder for borgere, nye smarte produktionsmetoder og nybrud indenfor vores videnskabelige viden.

Idag bliver der offentliggjort detaljer om de 170 projekter, som vil modtage støtte. De er indenfor fire brede kategorier: dataindsamling og beregnig; front-end og back-end elektronik; sensorer; og software og integration.

De fleste af de nye ideer; 64%, handler om næste generation af sensorer, 16% fokuserer på dataindsamling og beregning, 12% er software og integrationsprojekter, og 8% handler om elektronik, som skal bruges til nyudviklede sensorer og billedsystemer.

De 170 projekter, som modtager ATTRACT-bevillinger [1] har et år til at vise, at deres gennembrudsideer er værdige til yderligere investeringer, og de skal præsentere deres resultater ved en konference i efteråret 2020 i Bruxelles. I det etårige forløb kan projektholdene få hjælp fra ATTRACT konsortiets Aalto University, EIRMA og ESADE Business School til at undersøge, hvordan deres projekter og nye teknikker kan transformeres til innovative resultater med stort markedspotentiale.
