Polen bliver medlem af ESO

Idag underskrev den polske minister for videnskab og højere uddannelser, Professor Lena Kolarska-Bobińska en aftale, som vil gøre Polen til medlem af European Southern Observatory (ESO) - verdens mest produktive jordobservatorium. ESO glæder sig til at byde Polen velkommen som medlemsstat, når aftalen er blevet ratificeret.
Polens optagelsesaftale blev underskrevet idag i Warszawa af minister Minister Kolarska-Bobińska og ESOs generaldirektør Tim de Zeeuw, ved tilstedeværelse af andre højtstående embedsmænd fra Polen og ESO. Da aftalen betyder, at landet skal indgå i en international traktat, skal den nu ratificeres af det polske parlament[1]. Underskrivelsen kommer efter enstemmig godkendelse i ESOs Council ved et ekstraordinært møde 8. oktober 2014.
"Vi er meget glade for, at vores medlemskab af ESO nu er indenfor rækkevidde," siger minister Kolarska-Bobińska. "Dette vil åbne mange muligheder for os i fremtiden, og det vil fremme både polsk industri, videnskab og teknologi. Det er begyndelsen på et fantastisk partnerskab for europæinsk astronomi, og det vil også styrke vore forbindelser til Chile. Vi samarbejder allerede intensivt med Chile blandt andet indenfor mineindustrien; hvor Chiles naturforhold også er enestående."
Forbindelsen imellem ESO og Polen stikker dybere end de respektive astronomiske grupper. For eksempel fandt den seneste ESO Industry Day sted i Warszawa, i januar 2013. Ved den lejlighed havde ESO muligheden for at informere polsk industri om ESOs nuværende faciliteter og de fremtidige planer, blandt andet konstruktionen af European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT).
"Vi ser frem til at få Polen med i vores organisation", siger ESOs generaldirektør Tim de Zeeuw. "Polen har en stærk astronomisk tradition, og det vil styrke vores viden i alle ESOs medlemsstater, for eksempel indenfor tidsserieastronomi. Polen får adgang til nogle af de bedste observatorier og teleskoper i verden, inklusive VLT på Paranal, ALMA ved Chajnantor og indenfor det næste årti også E-ELT på Armazonesbjerget. Nu kan Polen også tage del i konstruktionen af E-ELT."
Polen, hvorfra Nicolaus Copernicus kommer, har en stærk tradition for astronomi lige frem til idag. "Polske astronomer har bridraget meget til den astronomiske forskning i de senere år, og når vi kommer med i ESO vil vores bidrag kun blive endnu større," siger minister Kolarska-Bobińska.

ESO er den fremmeste fællesnationale astronomiorganisation i Europa, og verdens langt mest produktive jordbaserede astronomiske observatorium. 15 lande er med i ESO: Belgien, Brazilien, Danmark, Finland, Frankrig, Italien, Nederlandene, Portugal, Spanien, Sverige, Schweiz, Storbritannien, Tjekkiet, Tyskland og Østrig. ESO har et ambitiøst program, som gør det muligt for astronomer at gøre vigtige videnskabelige opdagelser. Programmet har focus på design, konstruktion og drift af stærke jordbaserede observatorier. Desuden har ESO en ledende rolle i formidling og organisering af samarbejde omkring astronomisk forskning. ESO driver tre enestående observatorier i verdensklasse i Chile: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO VLT, Very Large Telescope, som er verdens mest avancerede observatorium for synligt lys, samt to oversigtsteleskoper. VISTA, som observerer i infrarødt, er verdens største oversigtsteleskop, og VLT Survey Teleskopet er det største teleskop bygget til at overvåge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er Europas partner i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden planlægges E-ELT, et 39 m optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop, som bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
