Danmarks Kronprinspar besøger ESOs Paranal-observatorium

Den 14. marts 2013 besøgte Hans Kongelige Højhed, Kronprinsen af Danmark, ledsaget af sin hustru Hendes Kongelige Højhed, Kronprinsessen, ESOs Paranal-observatorium, som en del af deres officielle besøg i Chile. De blev vist rundt på ESOs verdensførende astronomiske faciliteter i Paranal, af ESOs generaldirektør Tim de Zeeuw.

De blev vist rundt på ESOs verdensførende astronomiske faciliteter i Paranal, af ESOs generaldirektør Tim de Zeeuw.

Danmarks Kronprinspar besøgte ESOs Paranal-observatorium i forbindelse med deres officielle besøg i Chile. Observatoriet ligger 130 kilometer syd for Antofagasta, i hjertet af Chiles Atacamaørken, den tørreste ørken i verden. I en højde på 2635 meter over havets overflade er Paranal hjemsted for Very Large Telescope (VLT), verdens mest avancerede optiske instrument dedikeret til astronomisk forskning.

Ved ankomsten blev Kronprins Frederik og Kronprinsesse Mary budt velkommen af ESOs generaldirektør, Tim de Zeeuw, der introducerede dem til ESOs banebrydende forskning. Deres Kongelige Højheder, der var ledsaget af Danmarks udenrigsminister Villy Søvndal og den danske ambassadør i Chile Lars Steen Nielsen, besøgte derefter faciliteterne. Først så de Paranals prisvindende Residencia, der huser personalet på stedet, og fortsatte derefter med et besøg til teleskoperne selv, på toppen af Cerro Paranal. Fra platformene hvor teleskoperne ligger, så de Paranals berømte solnedgang, en særlig tradition for personale på arbejde inden starten på deres nattevagt. 

I løbet af besøget sagde HKH Kronprinsen: ”Det er en fornøjelse at besøge sådan en eksklusiv og ledende videnskabelig facilitet. Arbejdet der udføres her er virkeligt enestående. Som danskere er vi stolte af at tage del i denne indsats.”

Generaldirektøren tilføgede: ”Vi er meget beærede over at modtage Kronprinsparret her på Paranal og at kunne introducere dem til vores arbejde. Danmark er en værdifuld og mangeårig medlemsstat og jeg vil gribe denne mulighed for at takke Prinsen og Prinsessen på vegne af ESO for den fortsatte store støtte fra Danmark til vores program. Jeg er specielt glad for, at deres besøg sammenfalder med at Danmark tager et vigtigt skridt imod at slutte sig til European Extemely Large Telescope”

Parret tilbragte natten på Paranal, og efter middagen gik de udenfor for at nyde den stjernerige Paranal himmel igennem et 50 cm hobby teleskop der blev stillet op af ESOs optiske ingeniør Stephane Guisard. To andre danskere, ESOs seniorrådgiver for internationale relationer, Claus Madsen samt lederen for uddannelse og formidling Lars Lindberg Christensen, gav det Kongelige par to signerede bøger de forfattede i forbindelse med ESOs 50 års jubilæum.

Danmark var det første land der tilsluttede sig de grundlæggende fem ESO medlemslande (Belgien, Frankrig, Tyskland, Holland og Sverige) i 1967, og har siden bidraget til store opdagelser på ESO (se danske bidrag til ESO)

ESO er den mest fremtrædende internationale astronomi-organisation i Europa og verdens mest produktive astronomiske observatorium. ESO har i dag følgende 15 medlemslande: Belgien, Brasilien, Danmark, Finland, Frankrig, Holland, Italien, Portugal, Schweiz og Storbritannien, Spanien, Sverige, Tjekkiet, Tyskland og Østrig. ESOs aktiviteter er fokuseret på design, konstruktion og drift af jordbaserede observationsfaciliteter for at muliggøre vigtige videnskabelige opdagelser inden for astronomi. ESO spiller også en ledende rolle for at fremme og organisere samarbejdet inden for astronomisk forskning. I Chile driver ESO tre unikke observatorier i verdensklasse: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), der er verdens mest avancerede astronomiske observatorium til observationer i synligt lys samt to kortlægningsteleskoper. VISTA arbejder i infrarødt lys og er verdens største kortlægningsteleskop, mens VLT Survey Telescope (VST) er det største teleskop, der udelukkende er bygget til at kortlægge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er den europæiske partner i et revolutionerede astronomisk teleskop kaldet ALMA, det største igangværende astronomiske projekt. ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 39 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
