En stjerne er født over ALMA - eller flere
På denne flotte enkeltoptagelse i høj opløsning er der tre himmelobjekter at se foran parabolen til en af antennerne i ALMA - Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Billedet er taget under ESO Ultra HD Expedition.
Den mest markante af objekterne er den rødfarvede Carina Nebula, også kendt som NGC 3372. Det er en stor gassky, som hovedsagelig består af hydrogengas, og hvor der "for nyligt" er dannet nye stjerner. De kortlivede tunge blå stjerner, som dannes inde i tågen, udsender kollosale mængder af ultraviolet stråling. Den stråling ioniserer den omgivende gas, og får hydrogenatomerne til at lyse op med den karakteristiske røde farve. Efterhånden vil supernovaeksplosioner og kraftig stjernevind fra de tungeste stjerner sprede gasarterne i Carinatågen. Tilbage vil der så være en eller flere unge stjernehobe.
To sådanne stjernehobe, med betegnelserne NGC 3532 og IC 2602, ses henholdsvis over og til højre og over og til venstre for Carinatågen.
Alle tre himmelobjekter hører til stjernebilledet Carina (Kølen), og de blev for første gang nævnt i et katalog af den franske astronom Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. På billedet ser de ud til at være tæt på hinanden, men i virkeligheden er afstandene vidt forskellige. IC 2602 er mindre end 500 lysår fra os; NGC 3532 er omkring 1300 lysår borte, og selve Carinatågen menes at ligge op til 10.000 lysår væk.
De grålige skygger er nogle af de sjældne skyer over Chajnantorsletten, hvor ALMA befinder sig.
