Il Principe e la Principessa Ereditari della Danimarca visitano l'Osservatorio di Paranal dell'ESO

Il 14 marzo 2013 Sua Altezza Reale il Principe Ereditario di Danimarca, accompagnato dalla moglie, Sua Altezza Reale la Principessa Ereditaria, ha visitato l'Osservatorio di Paranal dell'ESO, nell'ambito di una visita ufficiale in Cile. Sono stati accompagnati dal Direttore Generale dell'ESO, Tim de Zeeuw, nella visita alle strutture astronomiche d'avanguardia dell'Osservatorio del Paranal dell'ESO.
I Principi Ereditari della Danimarca hanno visitato l'Osservatorio del Paranal dell'ESO durante la loro visita ufficiale in Cile. L'Osservatorio si trova circa 130 chilometri a sud di Antofagasta, nel cuore del deserto cileno di Atacama, il deserto più arido al mondo. Ad un'altitudine di 2635 metri sul livello del mare, il Paranal è sede del VLT (Very Large Telescope), lo strumento ottico più avanzato al mondo dedicato alla ricerca astronomica.
Al suo arrivo, il Principe Frederik e la Principessa Mary sono stati accolti dal Direttore Generale dell'ESO, Tim de Zeeuw, che ha presentato loro la ricerca di punta dell'ESO. Le Loro Altezze Reali hanno poi visitato le strutture, scoprendo innanzitutto la multipremiata Residencia, che ospita il personale che lavora al sito, e quindi i telescopi, sulla cima del Cerro Paranal. Dalla piattaforma su cui sono ubicati i telescopi hanno ammirato il famoso tramonto del Paranal, una tradizione particolare del personale in servizio prima di iniziare il turno di notte.
Durante la visita, Sua Altezza Reale il Principe Ereditario ha detto: "È un piacere parlare da una struttura scientifica così esclusiva e all'avanguardia. Il lavoro fatto qui è veramente eccellente. Come danesi siamo orgogliosi di partecipare a questa impresa".
Il Direttore Generale ha aggiunto: "Siamo molto onorati di ricevere i Principi Ereditari qui a Paranal e di far conoscere loro il nostro lavoro. La Danimarca è uno stimato Stato Membro da molti anni. Colgo perciò l'occasione per ringraziare il Principe e la Principessa da parte dell'ESO per il continuo sostegno dato dalla Danimarca al nostro programma".
La coppia ha trascorso la notte al Paranal e dopo cena ha visitato la Sala di Controllo dove l'astronomo e membro danese del Comitato Tecnico Scientifico dell'ESO, Johan Fynbo, stava osservando al secondo UT (Unit Telescop) del VLT. Fynbo ha eseguito una dimostrazione dell'uso del telescopio e spiegato quali tipi di osservazioni vengono realizzate. Altri due danesi, Claus Madsen, Consigliere Senior per le Relazioni internazionali dell'ESO e Lars Lindberg Christensen, Capo del gruppo di Didattica e Divulgazione, hanno regalato alla Coppia Reale una copia autografata dei libri da loro scritti per il 50esimo anniversario dell'ESO.
La Danimarca è stato il primo paese ad aggiungersi nel 1967 ai 5 membri fondatori dell'ESO (Belgio, Francia, Germania, Olanda e Svezia) e da allora ha contribuito a scoperte importanti dell'ESO (si veda coinvolgimento danese in ESO).

L'ESO (European Southern Observatory, o Osservatorio Australe Europeo) è la principale organizzazione intergovernativa di Astronomia in Europa e l'osservatorio astronomico più produttivo al mondo. È sostenuto da 15 paesi: Austria, Belgio, Brasile, Danimarca, Finlandia, Francia, Germania, Gran Bretagna, Italia, Olanda, Portogallo, Repubblica Ceca, Spagna, Svezia, e Svizzera. L'ESO svolge un ambizioso programma che si concentra sulla progettazione, costruzione e gestione di potenti strumenti astronomici da terra che consentano agli astronomi di realizzare importanti scoperte scientifiche. L'ESO ha anche un ruolo di punta nel promuovere e organizzare la cooperazione nella ricerca astronomica. L'ESO gestisce tre siti osservativi unici al mondo in Cile: La Silla, Paranal e Chajnantor. Sul Paranal, l'ESO gestisce il Very Large Telescope, osservatorio astronomico d'avanguardia nella banda visibile e due telescopi per survey. VISTA, il più grande telescopio per survey al mondo, lavora nella banda infrarossa mentre il VST (VLT Survey Telescope) è il più grande telescopio progettato appositamente per produrre survey del cielo in luce visibile. L'ESO è il partner europeo di un telescopio astronomico di concetto rivoluzionario, ALMA, il più grande progetto astronomico esistente. L'ESO al momento sta progettando l'European Extremely Large Telescope o E-ELT (significa Telescopio Europeo Estremamente Grande), un telescopio da 39 metri che opera nell'ottico e infrarosso vicino e che diventerà "il più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo".
