Firmato contratto per i rilevatori degli strumenti dell’ELT dell’ESO

L’ESO ha firmato un contratto con la compagnia californiana Teledyne Imaging Sensors per l’acquisto dei rilevatori necessari a costruire tre strumenti del futuro Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) dell’ESO, attualmente in fase di costruzione sulla vetta del Cerro Armazones, in Cile.
Questo contratto assicura le apparecchiature di rivelazione a infrarossi d’avanguardia necessarie a costruire i sensibili occhi di MICADO, HARMONI e METIS, strumenti innovativi che permetteranno agli astronomi di esplorare le galassie dell’Universo primordiale, studiare le stelle e i gas delle galassie vicine e caratterizzare gli esopianeti usando il più grande telescopio al mondo nell’ottico e vicino infrarosso.
MICADO (Multi-Adaptive Optics Imaging Camera for Deep Observations) sarà il primo registratore di immagini destinato all’ELT. Avrà anche capacità spettroscopiche, ideali per ottenere spettri di oggetti compatti come le supernovae. La progettazione di MICADO è stata guidata dal desiderio di alta sensibilità e risoluzione e avrà capacità senza precedenti. La sua costruzione richiederà molti dispositivi individuali da combinare in un unico e grande mosaico rilevatore.
HARMONI (High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph) permetterà all’ELT di acquisire dati del vicino infrarosso usando la spettroscopia a campo integrale [1]. Il suo design, unico e innovativo, rende più facile calibrare e operare e spingerà la spettroscopia a campo integrale a nuovi livelli. Anche il progetto HARMONI richiederà molti rilevatori da combinare in quattro mosaici individuali.
Il terzo strumento, METIS (Mid-Infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph), necessiterà di 5 rilevatori più piccoli, quattro dei quali saranno uniti in un mosaico, mentre il quinto fungerà da registratore di immagini separato e ad alta velocità. Il potente spettrografo dello strumento permetterà agli astronomi di studiare le proprietà degli esopianeti, come i loro parametri orbitali, le strutture, la temperatura e persino la composizione delle loro atmosfere.
I tre strumenti sono il risultato di un intenso lavoro di sviluppo nell’arco di molti anni, sia presso l’ESO sia altrove. Con la stipula di questo contratto si potrà iniziare l’assemblaggio dei nuclei sensibili di questi strumenti innovativi, portando l’ESO più vicino al completamento del più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo.

[1] Con la spettroscopia di campo integrale il segnale di ogni cella o pixel del campo è trasmesso allo spettrografo, che poi genera uno spettro per ognuno di loro.
