Xavier Barcons utnämnd till ESO:s nya generaldirektör

ESO:s råd har utsett Xavier Barcons, 57, som ESO:s nästa generaldirektör. Han börjar i tjänst den 1 september 2017 då mandatperioden för den nuvarande generaldirektören Tim de Zeeuw löper ut.

– Det är med glädje att jag å Rådets vägnar utnämner Xavier Barcons som efterföljare till Tim de Zeeuw som generaldirektör. Xavier ligger utmärkt bra till för att leda organisationens framtida utveckling under nästa fasen i dess program. I detta ingår bygget av European Extremely Large Telescope, det mest kraftfulla och mest ambitiösa teleskopet i sitt slag. Vi tackar Tim för hans exemplariska ledarskap av ESO genom ett särskilt framgångsrikt årtionde som har befäst ESO som världens ledande astronomiska observatorium, säger han.
Professor Xavier Barcons är spanjor och namnkunnig såväl inom den akademiska världen som expert inom forskningspolitik. Han är väl känd vid ESO tack vare sin aktiva och framgångsrika tid som ordförande för ESO-rådet mellan 2012 och 2014, en period som innefattade godkännandet av E-ELT-programmet och början av fas 1 av teleskopbygget. Han har också tjänstgjort som en aktiv medlem och ordförande för många av ESO:s kommittéer, senast som ordförande för Observationsprogramkommittén.
– Det gläder mig att kunna lämna över stafettpinnen till just Xavier, som jag har haft nöjet av att arbeta nära med under många år. Omfånget av ESO:s program har expanderat mycket framtiden ser ljus ut – ALMA producerar fascinerande resultat, E-ELT är under uppbyggnad och nya projekt och medlemsstater syns på horisonten. Men det finns också utan tvekan många utmaningar framöver, och jag kan inte tänka mig en bättre kapten att styra skeppet än Xavier, kommenterar Tim de Zeeuw.
– Jag känner mig ärad att ta över ledarskapet för ESO i denna spännande tid. Under Tims ledarskap har organisationen blomstrat och vuxit. Jag ser fram emot att se E-ELT förverkligas och att överse det fortsatta utvecklandet av Very Large Telescope, ALMA och många andra av ESO:s projekt. Jag ser också fram emot att få jobba med ESO:s världsklassiga personal, tillägger Xavier Barcons.
Xavier Barcons påbörjade sin karriär som fysiker och 1985 doktorerade han vid University of Cantabria på temat het plasma och det intergalaktiska mediet. Detta ledde till ett intresse för röntgenastronomi och studier av avlägsna kvasarers spektra. Efter att ha arbetat under en period i Cambridge, Storbritannien, återvände han till Spanien och spelade en avgörande roll när Spaniens första forskargrupp inom röntgenastronomi etablerades. Sedan 2002 är han forskarprofessor vid Spanska rådet för vetenskaplig forskning (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, förkortat CSIC).
Sedan dess har Xaviers forskning fokuserat på röntgenstrålning och han har använt data från många olika rymdteleskop, inklusive Einstein, ROSAT och XMM-Newton, samt arrangerat många storskaliga markbaserade observationskampanjer vid ESO och på andra håll. Under de senaste 15 åren har han arbetat för nästa generation av European X-ray observatory, som nu valts av ESA som en del av Athena-projektet. Ett särskilt område av vetenskapligt intresse är beteendet hos aktiva galaxkärnor i det avlägsna universum och om man når en bättre förståelse av deras egenskaper och utveckling genom att observera både från rymden och marken.
Xavier Barcons är gift med två barn.
