Från sin kupol på Cerro Paranal i Chiles Atacamaöken avnjuter VISTA-teleskopet (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) en fantastisk vy inte bara den sydliga himlen, utan också av den närbelägna bergstopp där ESO:s Very Large Telescope (VLT) är beläget.
VISTA utvecklades av ett konsortium av 18 universitet i Storbritannien och är det enda teleskopet i världen som helt och hållet är avsett för kartläggning av himlen i nära infrarött ljus. Teleskopet tar bilder för sex olika publika projekt vilka använder det mesta av observationstiden. Deras mål är att upptäcka bruna dvärgar, variabla stjärnor och avlägsna kvasarer, att kasta nytt ljus på forskningsområden som den mörka materiens egenskaper och galaktiska strukturer, och att bidra med data till en 3D-karta av omkring fem procent av det observerbara universat.
Men varför observationer i nära infrarött ljus? Detta våglängdsområde gör det möjligt att studera universums kalla objekt – som ofta lyser starkare i dessa våglängder än i optiskt ljus – men också att undersöka avlägsna kosmiska källor. Dessa objekt ligger på så stort avstånd att deras ljus, på grund av universums expansion, har sträckts ut till längre våglängder under färden till oss. Sist men inte minst blockeras inte det infraröda ljuset i lika hög grad av gas- och stoftmoln, vilket gör det möjligt att se objekt som annars hade varit osynliga.
