ESO apoya la Declaración European Open Science Cloud

ESO ha respaldado la Declaración EOSC y ha expresado su apoyo a la iniciativa denominada European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) sobre el acceso abierto a datos científicos. El EOSC es una interesante iniciativa de la Comisión Europea que reconoce la necesidad vital de contar con un acceso abierto a datos confiables y seguros en el mundo actual de la investigación científica. En una carta dirigida al Comisario Europeo de Investigación e Innovación, Carlos Moedas, y al Director General de Investigación e Innovación de la CE, Robert-Jan Smits, el Director General de ESO, Xavier Barcons, ofreció la experiencia de ESO para apoyar la gobernanza de la EOSC y, en particular, para mejorar la administración de los datos de archivo, posibilitando nuevos descubrimientos científicos.
El objetivo del EOSC es impulsar y apoyar cambios que aceleren la transición más efectiva a una ciencia e innovación abiertas, eliminando las barreras a la reutilización de información y herramientas de investigación. El objetivo final es lograr un ambiente globalmente accesible, operando en condiciones confiables y bien definidas, dentro del cual los investigadores, innovadores, empresas y ciudadanos puedan publicar, encontrar y reutilizar los datos y herramientas de investigación de cada cual, para propósitos de investigación, innovación y educación.
La astronomía ha estado siempre a la vanguardia, ofreciendo acceso bien gestionado, administrado y abierto a los datos. ESO tiene una larga tradición en este ámbito, lo cual ha impulsado los avances científicos de los Observatorios La Silla, Paranal y ALMA, proporcionando herramientas de procesamiento de datos y desarrollando y operando sus respectivos archivos científicos. Además, la historia misma de ESO es testimonio de los beneficios científicos derivados de la cooperación intergubernamental y de la transferencia fluida de ideas, recursos y personas a través de las fronteras. Por ello, ESO puede desempeñar un papel de liderazgo para dar un impulso decisivo hacia una ciencia abierta en Europa y más allá.
