Imagem do sistema binário R Aquarii obtida em 2012 pelo VLT
Esta imagem mostra o sistema estelar binário R Aquarii, situado a cerca de 700 anos-luz de distância da Terra. A imagem foi obtida pelo Very Large Telescope do ESO em 2012.
R Aquarii é um tipo de objeto conhecido por “binário simbiótico”, composto por duas estrelas que se encontram rodeadas por uma enorme e dinâmica nuvem de gás (uma nebulosa). Este tipo de sistemas contém duas estrelas em interação numa relação complexa e desigual — uma anã branca e uma gigante vermelha. A gigante vermelha está a perder massa para a sua companheira, havendo ocasionalmente ejeção de matéria sob a forma de estranhos jactos, arcos e rastros, o que dá origem às formas curiosas observadas na imagem.
Existem muitos processos a acontecer entre as “atrizes” deste duplo ato cósmico. A gigante vermelha é uma estrela variável, com um brilho que varia de um factor 750 num período de um ano e três semanas. Pensa-se que a nebulosa ténue chamada Cederblad 211 é o resultado de uma violenta nova que ocorreu há cerca de 250 anos. Vemos também uma estrutura em forma de S, fina e vertical, com nodos de material super quente que se move para o exterior a grandes velocidades — entre 600 e 850 quilómetros por segundo.
Obteve-se também a imagem de R Aquarii 15 anos antes — para além de diversas vezes desde essa altura — no intuito de observar a sua atividade contínua. O sistema é muito dinâmico e complexo, tendo-se expandido e evoluído significativamente nos últimos anos (neste link pode ser consultada uma imagem de 1997 e a comparação entre as duas imagens encontra-se disponível aqui).
