Imagem da Nova Centauri 2013
Duas das estrelas mais brilhantes do céu austral, Alfa e Beta Centauri, têm agora uma nova companheira visível a olho nu, a Nova Centaurus 2013.
Esta fotografia foi tirada pelo Embaixador Fotográfico do ESO Yuri Beletsky no Observatório de La Silla do ESO, no deserto chileno do Atacama, nas primeiras horas da manhã do dia 9 de dezembro de 2013.
Esta nova foi descoberta a 2 de dezembro de 2013 por John Seach, na Austrália, quando o objeto se aproximava da luminosidade possível de observar a olho nu. A nova Centaurus 2013 é a nova mais brilhante que ocorreu até agora neste milénio.
Este evento particular é conhecido como uma nova clássica e não deve ser confundido com uma supernova. As novas clássicas ocorrem em sistemas binários de estrelas quando o hidrogénio gasoso originário da parceira estelar é acretado na superfície da estrela principal, dando origem a um evento termonuclear que faz com que a estrela principal brilhe mais intensamente. Nas novas clássicas a estrela principal não é destruída como no caso das supernovas. Em vez disso, a estrela torna-se dramaticamente mais brilhante ao mesmo tempo que se dá uma expansão da concha de detritos.
Podemos ver esta nova logo à esquerda de Beta Centauri, a mais azul e mais alta das duas estrelas brilhantes na zona inferior direita da fotografia. O Cruzeiro do Sul e a Nebulosa do Saco de Carvão também aparecem na imagem, próximo do topo.
Em primeiro plano à esquerda temos o telescópio de 3,6 metros do ESO, inaugurado em 1976, onde está atualmente montado o espectrógrafo HARPS, o mais prolífico detector de exoplanetas do mundo. Situado 600 km a norte de Santiago, a uma altitude de 2400 metros na periferia do deserto chileno do Atacama, La Silla foi o primeiro observatório do ESO e o maior da sua época.
