Gloednieuwe foto van Nova Centauri 2013
Alpha en Beta Centauri, twee van de helderste sterren aan de zuidelijke hemel, hebben een nieuwe metgezel: de met het blote oog zichtbare Nova Centauri 2013 .
Deze foto is in de ochtenduren van maandag 9 december 2013 gemaakt door ESO Photo Ambassador Yuri Beletsky bij ESO's La Silla Observatory in de Chileense Atacama-woestijn.
De nova werd op 2 december 2013 ontdekt door Australiër John Seach toen hij bijna met het blote oog gezien kon worden. Nova Centauri 2013 is de helderste nova die tot nu toe heeft plaatsgevonden in dit millennium.
Deze bijzondere gebeurtenis staat bekend als een klassieke nova, niet te verwarren met een supernova. Klassieke novae treden op in dubbelsterren als waterstofgas van de stellaire partner ophoopt op het oppervlak van de primaire ster, waarna een op hol geslagen thermonucleaire gebeurtenis resulteert in het oplichten van de primaire ster. Bij een klassieke nova is de primaire ster niet vernietigd, zoals wel het geval is bij een supernova. In plaats daarvan wordt de ster aanzienlijk helderder, dijt zijn buitenste laag tijdelijk uit.
De nova is op de foto net links van Beta Centauri, de meest blauwe en hoge van de twee heldere sterren in de rechterbenedenhoek, zichtbaar. Het Zuiderkruis en de Kolenzaknevel zijn ook vastgelegd in de buurt van de bovenkant van het beeld.
Op de voorgrond, aan de linkerkant, staat de in 1976 ingehuldigde 3,6-meter telescoop van ESO met de HARPS-spectrograaf: de meest productieve exoplaneet-jager ter wereld. Het op 600 kilometer ten noorden van Santiago gelegen La Silla, op 2400 meter hoogte aan de rand van de Chileense Atacama-woestijn, was de eerst ESO-site in Chili en het grootste observatorium van zijn tijd.
