Una cartolina dallo spazio extragalattico?

Una galassia a spirale che ricorda la Via Lattea

Gli astronomi dell’ESO hanno utilizzato lo strumento WFI (Wide Field Imager) installato sul telescopio da 2.2 metri dell’MPG/ESO per riprendere NGC 6744. Questa impressionante galassia a spirale si trova a circa 30 milioni di anni luce dalla Terra, nella costellazione del Pavone. Ma questo paesaggio potrebbe quasi rappresentare una cartolina della nostra Via Lattea, uno scatto preso da un nostro amico extragalattico, tanto questa galassia assomiglia alla nostra.

Vediamo NGC 6744 quasi di “faccia”, abbiamo cioè una magnifica vista a volo d’uccello della struttura della galassia. Se avessimo i mezzi tecnologici per sfuggire alla Via Lattea e osservarla dallo spazio intergalattico, questo sarebbe più o meno lo spettacolo che si aprirebbe davanti a noi – appariscenti braccia a spirale che avvolgono un nucleo denso e allungato e un disco di polvere. Si vede anche una piccola galassia vicina di forma distorta – NGC 6744A, la piccola macchia in basso a destra rispetto a NGC 6744, che ricorda una delle vicine della Via Lattea, le Nubi di Magellano.

Una delle differenze tra NGC 6744 e la Via Lattea è la dimensione. Mentre la nostra galassia ha un diametro di circa 100 000 anni luce, la galassia qui raffigurata è grande quasi il doppio. Nonostante ciò, NGC 6744 è simile in modo provocante a come un osservatore lontano potrebbe vedere la nostra dimora galattica.

Questo spettacolare oggetto è una delle più grandi e vicine galassie a spirale. Anche se ha una luminosità pari a 60 miliardi di soli, la sua luce è sparsa su una grande area di cielo – circa due terzi della dimensione della luna piena, facendo sì che la galassia, osservata con un piccolo telescopio, appaia come una macchia sfuocata con un centro molto luminoso. E invece è uno degli oggetti più belli del cielo australe e può essere identificata dagli astronomi dilettanti grazie alla forma  ovale che contrasta con un ricco sfondo di stelle.

Con i telescopi professionali, come il 2,2 metri dell’MPG/ESO a La Silla che ha ottenuto questa immagine, NGC 6744 mostra tutto il suo splendore. I bracci a spirale striati di polvere ospitano molte zone di formazione stellare (che qui splendono in rosso) e disegnano la forma appariscente di questa sosia della Via Lattea.

Questa veduta è stata ottenuta con lo strumento WFI (Wide Field Imager) montato sul telescopio da 2,2 metri all’Osservatorio di La Silla in Cile. L’immagine è composta da diverse esposizioni prese attraverso vari filtri che fanno passare la luce blu, quella giallo-verde e quella rossa così come l’emisisone dell’idrogeno gassoso. Questi filtri sono resi nell’immagine finale colorandoli rispettivamente di blu, verde, arancione e rosso.
