Venere come una mezzaluna
Qui vediamo la falce crescente della Luna che si alza sopra la serena Residencia dell’osservatorio Paranal di ESO. Accanto alla Luna, è visibile anche Venere, la stella del mattino, insieme ad una rete di telescopi di ESO, visibili sullo sfondo e fermi dopo una notte di osservazione.
Anche Venere ha delle fasi diverse, simili a quelle della Luna, ma sono troppo piccole per essere visibili in quest’immagine.
Dalla Terra vediamo Venere come un disco, quando essa striscia dietro il Sole - i raggi solari colpiscono il lato di Venere che guarda in faccia il Sole, e l’immagine di una faccia piena viene riflesso verso di noi. La fase crescente accade quando Venere emerge da dietro il Sole verso la parte della sua orbita che si trova tra la Terra e il Sole e, progressivamente, meno superficie è direttamente illuminata dal nostro punto di vista. Mentre Venere continua la sua marcia attorno al Sole, la mezzaluna declina, lasciando solo un frammento illuminato dalla luce solare.
Fino al punto in cui Venere raggiunge la congiunzione e scompare alla nostra vista, per poi riemergere di nuovo come una sottile, ma crescente mezzaluna e dare di nuovo inizio al ciclo delle fasi.
