L'ESO compie cinquant'anni quest'anno, e per celebrare questo importante anniversario, vi mostreremo scorci della nostra storia. Una volta al mese per tutto il 2012, un'Immagine della Settimana (Picture of the Week) speciale, della serie "Passato e Presente" (Then and Now) mostra come le cose sono cambiate nei decenni nei siti della Silla e di Paranal, negli uffici dell'ESO a Santiago del Cile e nel quartier generale dell'ESO a Garching bei München, Germania.

L'immagine storica è stata scattata attorno agli anni '70 dai dormitori de La Silla, situati più in basso sulla montagna delle cupole dei telescopi. La foto guarda al punto più alto della montagna, dalla sinistra. La struttura metallica visibile accanto al picco non è un telescopio, ma una cisterna d'acqua per il sito. La cupola bianca in centro all'immagine appartiene al telescopio Schmidt da 1 metro, che ha cominciato a lavorare nel Febbraio 1972. Sull'estrema destra dell'immagine si vede l'altro telescopio ESO da 1 metro, appena individuabile oltre alla cresta collinare, e a sinistra si può vedere il telescopio Grand Prisme Objectif

Nella foto odierna, il dormitorio rimane, ma è stato ampliato durante le decadi, ma il più grande cambiamento è visibile sul picco sinistro de La Silla. Nel punto più alto si trovano il telescopio ESO da 3.6 metri, operativo dal novembre 1976 e ancora in uso. questo telescopio monta l'HARPS, il cacciatore di exoplaneti (vedi eso1134 e eso1214 per risultati recenti). Il telescopio da 3.6 metri incoronò La Silla, essendo il più grande e tecnologicamente avanzato telescopio sul sito. La cupola più piccola visibile di fronte al telescopio da 3.6 metri è il Telescopio Ausiliario Coudè, complementare al suo vicino.

Alla destra del 3.6-metri si trova il New Technlogy Telescope (NTT) da 3.58 metri, riconoscibile dalla forma squadrata. L'NTT che ha iniziato ad operare nel 1989, fu il primo ad utilizzare uno specchio controllato da computer, fu il precursore del Very Large Telescope, e fu usato anche per testare nuove tecnologie destinate poi a futuri apparecchi.

Anche oggi, La Silla resta un osservatorio molto attivo dove molte scoperte importanti vengono fatte. Sia l'NTT e il telescopio da 3.6metri hanno aiutato la ricerca astronomica e la scoperta dell'accellerazione dell'espansione dell'Universo -- scoperta valsa un Nobel per la fisica nel 2011.
