L'ESO continua a essere l'Osservatorio da terra più produttivo al mondo

Il 2018 è stato un altro anno da ricordare per la ricerca all'ESO: ha portato l'ESO a mantenere la distinzione di essere l'osservatorio più produttivo al mondo. Gli osservatori dell'ESO continuano a fissare il livello della ricerca astronomica e, con 1093 pubblicazioni nel 2018, l'ESO ha superato la produttività di qualsiasi altro osservatorio a terra o nello spazio.
Il più grande contributo a questo risultato è stato l'impianto di punta di ESO, il VLT (Very Large Telescope) / VLTI (Very Large Telescope Interferometer) al Paranal. Un totale di 618 articoli sono stati pubblicati utilizzando i dati del VLT nel 2018. Lo strumento più produttivo quest'anno è stato UVES con 139 pubblicazioni, tallonato da X-shooter, MUSE e FORS2.
I telescopi dell'ESO all'Osservatorio di La Silla hanno continuato a essere produttivi, fornendo i dati per 236 articoli nel 2018. L'impianto di punta di La Silla è stato il cacciatore di pianeti extrasolari HARPS, responsabile di oltre la metà di quelle pubblicazioni (120). Il numero di articoli basati su dati HARPS aumenta di anno in anno, a dimostrazione del suo impatto significativo nel campo entusiasmante e in rapido sviluppo della ricerca di esopianeti.
Anche APEX e APEX [1] [2], in cui l'ESO è un partner fondamentale, hanno avuto anni di successo. Nel 2018 il numero di articoli pubblicati sulla base del tempo di osservazione europeo presso ALMA è aumentato del 24% rispetto al 2017, pari a 189 nuovi articoli pubblicati. Questa nuova ricerca ha portato il numero totale di articoli basati su osservazioni europee in ALMA a 650 da quando il telescopio ha iniziato a pubblicare dati nel 2012. APEX continua a essere un osservatorio produttivo - i 78 articoli pubblicati nel 2018 utilizzando i dati di tutti i partner di APEX hanno portato a 680 il numero totale di articoli pubblicati dall'inizio delle operazioni nel 2006 .
Se combinate, queste osservazioni mettono di nuovo l'ESO all'avanguardia nella ricerca astronomica. Sebbene i confronti possano essere complicati, poiché osservatori diversi usano metodi diversi per contare i risultati della ricerca, l'ESO rimane l'osservatorio più produttivo al mondo.
Questi risultati evidenziano il principale contributo dell'ESO alla ricerca astronomica e danno un'idea di quanto lavoro scientifico venga svolto con i dati dei singoli osservatori.
Le cifre sono pubblicate nelle statistiche annuali di base delle pubblicazioni dell'ESO [3] emesse dal Centro informazioni e biblioteca dell'ESO e calcolate utilizzando la bibliografia dell'ESO Telescope (telbib), una banca dati contenente pubblicazioni su riviste con referee che utilizzano i dati dell'ESO [4]. L'ESO compie notevoli sforzi per identificare tutti gli articoli su riviste con referee che utilizzano i dati ESO e ritiene che telbib sia sostanzialmente completo.
Grafici interattivi di statistiche selezionate sono disponibili online [5]. Questi grafici mostrano l'intero contenuto del database di telbib, che contiene le informazioni di tutte le pubblicazioni dal 1996 a oggi. Possono essere utilizzati per esplorare molti aspetti della storia della pubblicazione, compreso lo sviluppo di articoli scientifici utilizzando i dati degli strumenti dell'ESO e l'uso dei dati di archivio.

[2] APEX è una collaborazione tra l'Istituto Max Planck per l'astronomia radio, l'Osservatorio spaziale di Onsala e l'ESO ed è gestito dall'ESO vicino ad ALMA sull'altopiano di Chajnantor nella regione cilena di Atacama.
Le pubblicazioni basate sui dati di tutti i partner APEX sono registrate in telbib, ma solo quelle basate sul tempo di osservazione dell'ESO sono conteggiate nelle statistiche ESO, se non diversamente specificato.
