The secondary mirror of the ELT is successfully cast

In May 2017 the casting of the secondary mirror (M2) blank for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) was completed by SCHOTT in Mainz, Germany. It is 4.2 metres in diameter and weighs 3.5 tonnes, making it the largest secondary mirror ever employed on a telescope and also the largest convex mirror ever produced.
