Ein gealterter Beobachter
An den Observatorien der ESO in den chilenischen Bergen – auf La Silla, am Paranal und auf dem Chajnantor-Plateau – befindet sich eine breite Palette von Teleskopen, die von den 16 Mitgliedsländern der Organisation gebaut und betrieben werden. Im Laufe der Zeit werden ältere Teleskope langsam von ihren neueren und fortgeschritteneren Kollegen überholt. Einer dieser Oldtimer ist hier abgebildet: das schwedische ESO-Submillimeter-Teleskop (SEST).
SEST wurde 1987 auf La Silla errichtet und war einst ein bahnbrechendes Instrument: Es war das einzige große Teleskop auf der Südhalbkugel, das Radiowellen von Objekten im fernen Universum untersucht hat (also Submillimeterastronomie betrieben hat). Mit seiner riesigen Antennenschüssel mit einem Durchmesser von 15 Metern konnte das Teleskop einige der extremsten Phänomene im Kosmos beobachten.
Schließlich begannen jedoch neuere und fortschrittlichere Teleskope – wie das Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) und das Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX), beide auf dem Chajnantor-Plateau gelegen – bessere Messungen und Beobachtungen zu liefern, und SEST wurde 2003 außer Betrieb gesetzt.
Die Geschichte ist jedoch noch nicht ganz vorbei: SEST mag nicht mehr beobachten, aber die reflektierende Schüssel des Teleskops steht immer noch stolz auf La Silla und fungiert als Spiegel für den schönen Nachthimmel des Ortes.
