Unge stjerner i rampelyset

ESO’s New Technology Telescope (NTT) har taget et storslået billede af den åbne stjernehob NGC 2100. Denne smukke stjernehob er omkring 15 millioner år gammel og befinder sig i den Store Magellanske Sky, en af Mælkevejens nærtliggende satellitgalakser. Hoben er omgivet af glødende gas fra den nærtliggende Taranteltåge.

Observatører overser ofte NGC 2100, fordi den ligger tæt på den imponerende Taranteltåge (eso0650) og superstjernehoben RMC 136 (eso1030). Den glødende gas fra Taranteltågen forsøger endda at stjæle rampelyset i dette billede – de klare farver her er stjernetågens yderområder. Dette nye billede er en kombination af optagelser lavet gennem flere forskellige farvefiltre med EMMI-instrumentet [1] på New Technology Telescope, der står på ESO’s La Silla-observatorium i Chile. Stjernerne er vist i deres naturlige farver, mens lys fra glødende ioniseret brint er gengivet med røde farver og glødende ilt er gengivet med blå farver.

Farverne i en stjernetåge afhænger af temperaturen på de stjerner, der lyser tågen op. De unge, varme stjerner i Taranteltågen, som ligger i superstjernehoben RMC 136 (øverst til højre på billedet), har kraft nok til at få ilt til at gløde [2]. Det ses som den blålige tåge på billedet. Den røde glød nedenunder NGC 2100 antyder enten, at det er grænsen for påvirkningen fra de varme stjerner i RMC 136, eller at køligere og ældre stjerner, der kun er i stand til at påvirke brint, dominerer i dette område. De stjerner, som NGC 2100 består af, er ældre og mindre energirige og har derfor lidt eller ingen tåge tilknyttet.

Stjernehobe er grupper af stjerner, som er blevet dannet omtrent samtidig af den samme sky af gas og støv. De tungeste stjerner bliver oftest dannet i midten af hoben, mens lettere stjerner dominerer yderområderne. Dette forhold, kombineret med at der er flere stjerner koncentreret i de centrale dele, gør midten af en hob mere lysstærk end yderområderne.

NGC 2100 er en åben hob, hvilket betyder, at dens stjerner er forholdsvis løst bundet sammen af tyngdekraften. Åbne hobe har en levetid, der bliver målt i snesevis eller hundreder af millioner år, da de over tid spreder sig på grund af tyngdepåvirkning fra andre himmellegemer. Kuglehobe, som for det utrænede øje ligner en åben hob, indeholder mange flere ældre stjerner, er meget stærkere bundet af tyngdekraften og har derfor et længere livsforløb: Mange kuglehobe er blevet målt til at være næsten lige så gamle som Universet selv. Så selv om NGC 2100 er ældre end sine naboer i den Store Magellanske Sky, er den stadig en yngling, når vi taler om stjernehobe.

Data til dette billede af den undervurderede, unge hob er blevet udvalgt i ESO’s dataarkiv af David Roma, da han deltog i astrofoto-konkurrencen ”ESO’s Skjulte Skatte 2010”, som ESO afholdt i 2010 [3].

[1] EMMI står for ESO Multi Mode Instrument. Det fungerer både som kamera og spektrograf.

[2] Størstedelen af gløden fra ilt kommer fra iltatomer, der har mistet to elektroner. Denne stærke stråling er meget almindelig i stjernetåger, men mystificerede førhen astronomiske spektralanalytikere. De mente oprindelig, at strålingen kom fra et nyt grundstof, som fik navnet nebulium.
