En tur igennem Timeglasset
Motivet her er sandsynligvis det første sin slags, som er katalogiseret: Den timeglasformede rest, som har katalogbetegnelsen CK Vulpeculae. Oprindeligt mente forskerne, at det var en nova, det har i årenes løb været ikke så lidt svært at finde den rigtige klassifikation. Flere forskellige forslag til dets natur er blevet foreslået og senere forkastet. Nu mener forskerne, at det er resultatet af to stjerner, som er kollideret - selvom der stadig er debat om, hvilken slags stjerner, det var.
CK Vulpeculae blev først set den 20. juni 1670 af den franske munk og astronom Père Dom Anthelme. I starten var objektet let at se med det blotte øje, men i løbet af de følgende to år ændrede lysstyrken sig, det forsvandt og dukkede op igen to gange, inden det endeligt blev usynligt for datidens teleskoper.
I løbet af det tyvende århundrede fandt astronomerne ud af, at de fleste novaer kunne forklares som eksplosive vekselvirkninger imellem to stjerner i tæt kredsløb - et binært system. Det, man kunne observere omkring CK Vulpeculae så dog ikke ud til at passe særligt godt ind i denne ide, og derfor har oprindelsen været en gåde i mange år.
Nu er de centrale dele af området blevet studeret i detaljer med ALMA - Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Billedet her er det bedste til dato, og man kan følge støv og gas i og omkring CK Vulpeculae i stor detalje. CK Vulpeculae har en skævvredet skive med støv i centeret, og jets af gasarter, som tyder på, at der er et objekt i centrum, som er i stand til at slynge stof bort. De nyeste observationer er de første, som fortæller nyt om objektet, og som måske kan give os løsningen på et problem, som er 348 år gammelt!
