På vagt for Mælkevejens hjerte
Som vagtposter står ESO 3.6-metre telescope og Coudé Auxiliary Telescope
og vogter hjertet af vores galakse Mælkevejen i dette flotte billede i ultra high definition fra La Silla Observatoriet, i den sydlige del af den Chilenske Atacamaørken.
Siden det blev indviet i 1976 har ESOs 3,6 meter teleskop gennemgået flere opgraderinger. En af den var installationen af et nyt sekundærspejl, som har bevirket, at teleskopet stadig er effektivt og produktivt. Siden 2008 har teleskopet været koblet sammen med HARPS spectrografen, som er den mest nøjagtige exoplanetjæger i Verden. HARPS, the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, er det instrument, som til dato har fundet flest af de lettere exoplaneter.
1,4 meter Coudé hjælpeteleskopet er nu taget ud af brug. Det befinder sig stadig i den mindre kuppel til højre for 3,6 meter teleskopets kuppel. Da CAT'en var i brug sendte den lyset fra stjernerne ind til det Coudé Echelle Spectrometer, som også blev brugt af 3,6 m teleskopet igennem den lystunnel, som stadig forbinder de to kuppeltårne. CAT var helt computerstyret, og den er i årenes løb blevet brugt til mange forskellige typer astronomiske observationer, blandt andet til at måle aldre for meget gamle stjerner.
ESOs 3,6 m telekop står 2400 meter over havets overflade, og langt fra lysforurenende kilder i helt fantastiske observationsforhold. Det samme gør de andre teleskoper på højderyggen lidt lavere end selve La Sillabjerttinden. Iblandt familien kan nævnes New Technology Telescope (NTT), MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope og en række nationale teleskoper som det danske 1,52 m teleskop og det mindre, danske 50 cm teleskop, som nu bruges til andre formål.
