Amanecer en Cerro Armazones
El Sol se eleva tras Cerro Armazones en esta imagen de 2016, con la luz del sol marcando la silueta plana de la cima de la montaña y con Venus presenciando el comienzo de un nuevo día justo encima de la propia montaña.
La imagen es un ejemplo impresionante de , un fenómeno que ocurre cuando objetos como nubes o montañas bloquean parte de la luz solar entrante, típico al amanecer y al atardecer, cuando el Sol está bajo en el horizonte o debajo del mismo.
La cima del Cerro Armazones fue aplanada para convertirse en el hogar del Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), el próximo observatorio insignia de ESO, actualmente en construcción. Con un espejo principal de 39 metros de diámetro, el ELT será el ojo más grande del mundo para estudiar el universo, capaz de recoger 100 000 000 veces más luz que el ojo humano. Ayudará a la comunidad astronómica a encontrar nuevos planetas donde la vida pueda haberse desarrollado, a arrojar luz sobre la naturaleza de las estrellas y los agujeros negros y a revelar algunos de los secretos más íntimos del Universo.
La imagen fue tomada desde Paranal, donde ESO opera observatorios como el Very Large Telescope (VLT), el Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) y el VLT Survey Telescope (VST).
