El Extremely Large Telescope
ESO está diseñando actualmente el Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) que, con 42 metros de diámetro, será el mayor ojo del mundo hacia el cielo. Cuando comience sus operaciones el 2018, el ELT abordará los mayores desafíos científicos de nuestro tiempo y se espera que consiga notables primicias, incluyendo el seguimiento de planetas similares a la Tierra que están alrededor de otras estrellas en las “zonas habitables” donde podría existir vida: uno de los Santos Griales de la astronomía observacional moderna. El diseño mismo del espejo es revolucionario y se basa en un innovador esquema de cinco espejos que permitirá una calidad de imagen excepcional. El espejo principal consistirá de casi mil segmentos, cada uno de 1,45 metros de ancho y sólo 50 mm de espesor. El diseño óptico requiere un inmenso espejo secundario de 6 metros de diámetro, casi tan grande como los más grandes espejos primarios de telescopios en operación hoy en día.
Para compensar lo borroso de las fotografías estelares debido a la turbulencia atmosférica se incorporan a la óptica del telescopio espejos adaptables. Uno de estos espejos es sostenido por más de 5.000 accionadores que pueden distorsionar su forma mil veces por segundo.
El telescopio tendrá varios instrumentos científicos. Será posible pasar de un instrumento a otro en minutos. El telescopio y la cúpula también serán capaces de cambiar de posición en el cielo y empezar una nueva observación en muy corto tiempo.
