Presidente Piñera recibe el primer reloj atómico de ESO
El Director General de ESO hace entrega de histórico reloj como símbolo de agradecimiento por los 50 años de colaboración entre ESO y su país anfitrión

En una ceremonia llevada a cabo ayer en el Palacio de La Moneda, Sebastián Piñera, presidente de Chile, recibió el primer reloj atómico empleado por ESO en esta nación de manos de Tim de Zeeuw, Director General de ESO. Este obsequio, un reloj instalado originalmente en el Observatorio La Silla de ESO en 1975, fue entregado en agradecimiento por los cincuenta años de exitosa colaboración entre ESO y su país anfitrión. El Presidente en agradecimiento entregó al Director General un detallado libro con la rica historia del Palacio de La Moneda.
El reloj atómico fabricado por la empresa Rohde & Schwarz fue el primero de su tipo en Chile y, durante muchos años, su señal horaria cobró gran importancia más allá de La Silla. Se utilizó como referencia exacta de tiempo al sincronizarse con la fuente para la hora oficial de Chile, situada en el Observatorio del Cerro Calán en Santiago. Este proceso se efectuó por medio de una "unidad de tiempo transportable", que se trasladó físicamente de La Silla a Santiago, logrando así una sincronización de alta precisión a intervalos regulares.
Debido al fuerte vínculo que este reloj atómico representa, ESO decidió entregar a Chile el instrumento, como una de las últimas actividades del 50 aniversario para celebrar la relación entre ESO y el país que alberga sus observatorios.
"Para nosotros, este es un importante símbolo que representa nuestra gratitud por los 50 años de colaboración con Chile. Esperamos que el trabajo conjunto a realizarse en el futuro continúe generando grandes beneficios culturales, científicos y tecnológicos, tanto para el pueblo de Chile como para ESO", señala Tim de Zeeuw, Director General de la organización.
Durante la ceremonia el Director General de ESO, Tim de Zeeuw, estuvo acompañado por el Representante de ESO en Chile, Fernando Comerón y Laura Comendador, Jefa de Gabinete de ESO. El presidente Piñera asistió al evento con el Subsecretario de Relaciones Exteriores, Alfonso Silva, y el embajador Gabriel Rodríguez, del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile.
El reloj atómico contiene vapor de cesio en una cavidad resonante que controla una frecuencia de referencia que se puede utilizar para mantener la estabilidad del tiempo con una precisión extraordinaria.
Durante muchos años, este reloj entregó la hora exacta necesaria para dirigir los telescopios, permitiéndoles seguir el camino diario de los cuerpos celestes a lo largo del cielo. La señal horaria generada por el reloj era entonces distribuida al resto de los telescopios del Observatorio La Silla de ESO, así como a pantallas digitales instaladas en los mismos y en sus salas de control, manteniendo un nivel de exactitud superior a una millonésima de segundo.
