Xavier Barcons benoemd als volgende directeur-generaal van ESO

De ESO Raad heeft Xavier Barcons (57) benoemd als de volgende directeur-generaal van ESO. Hij neemt die functie in op 1 september 2017, wanneer de termijn van Tim de Zeeuw, de huidige directeur-generaal, verstrijkt.
‘Namens de Raad is het mij een groot genoegen om Xavier Barcons te benoemen tot opvolger van directeur-generaal Tim de Zeeuw,’ zegt Patrick Roche, voorzitter van de ESO Raad. ‘Xavier is bij uitstek geschikt om leiding te geven aan de verdere ontwikkeling van de organisatie die de volgende fase van haar programma ingaat, met onder meer de constructie van de European Extremely Large Telescope – de krachtigste en meest ambitieuze telescoop in zijn soort. Wij bedanken Tim voor zijn voorbeeldige leiderschap over ESO gedurende een opmerkelijk succesvol decennium, waarin ESO zich heeft ontwikkeld tot de meest toonaangevende sterrenwacht op aarde.’
Professor Xavier Barcons heeft de Spaanse nationaliteit en heeft een voortreffelijke carrière achter de rug, in de academische wereld en als deskundige op het gebied van wetenschapsbeleid. Hij is goed bekend met ESO, onder meer vanwege zijn actieve en succesvolle termijn als voorzitter van de Raad tussen 2012 en 2014, de periode waarin goedkeuring is gegeven aan het E-ELT-programma en de start van de eerste fase van de bouw van de telescoop. Hij heeft ook gediend als actief lid en voorzitter van tal van andere ESO-commissies, zoals recent als voorzitter van het Observing Programmes Committee.
Tim de Zeeuw: ‘Het verheugt mij zeer om het stokje te mogen overdragen aan Xavier, met wie ik vele jaren nauw heb mogen samenwerken. De reikwijdte van het ESO-programma is enorm toegenomen en de toekomst ziet er zonnig uit – ALMA levert fascinerende wetenschap af, de E-ELT is in aanbouw en aan de horizon gloren nieuwe projecten en lidstaten. Maar er staan ongetwijfeld ook vele uitdagingen voor de deur, en ik kan met geen betere kapitein voorstellen om het schip te sturen dan Xavier!’
Xavier Barcons voegt daaraan toe: ‘Ik ben zeer vereerd om het leiderschap van ESO in deze opwindende tijd over te mogen nemen. Onder Tims leiding is de organisatie opgebloeid en gegroeid. Ik kijk ernaar uit om de verwezenlijking van de E-ELT mee te maken en de verdere ontwikkeling van de Very Large Telescope, ALMA en tal van andere ESO-projecten te mogen overzien. Ook kijk ik er ernaar uit om samen te werken met de ESO-staf, die van wereldklasse is.’
Xavier Barcons is zijn loopbaan begonnen als natuurkundige en is in 1985 aan de Universiteit van Cantabrië gepromoveerd op een proefschrift over hete plasma’s en het intergalactische medium. Hierdoor raakte hij geïnteresseerd in de röntgenastronomie en het onderzoek van de spectra van verre quasars. Na een tijdje in Cambridge (VK) te hebben gewerkt, keerde hij terug naar Spanje, waar hij een grote rol heeft gespeeld bij het opzetten van de eerste vakgroep röntgenastronomie in zijn land. Sinds 2002 is hij onderzoeksprofessor bij de Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).
Xaviers latere onderzoek was gericht op de röntgenastronomie, waarbij hij gebruik heeft gemaakt van gegevens van diverse röntgensatellieten, waaronder Einstein, ROSAT en XMM-Newton, ook heeft hij diverse waarnemingscampagnes helpen opzetten bij ESO en andere sterrenwachten. De afgelopen vijftien jaar heeft hij zich ingezet voor de volgende Europese röntgensatelliet, de inmiddels door ESA geselecteerde Athena-missie. Zijn bijzondere interesse hebben de kernen van actieve sterrenstelsels in het verre heelal, en hoe we door middel van waarnemingen vanuit de ruimte en vanaf de grond meer te weten kunnen komen over hun eigenschappen en evolutie.
Xavier Barcon is getrouwd en heeft twee kinderen.
