Chileense president bezoekt Paranal om de grond voor de E-ELT over te dragen

Tijdens een ceremonie die gisteren bij de ESO-sterrenwacht op Paranal in de Chileense Atacamawoestijn werd gehouden heeft de president van Chili, Sebastián Piñera, de onlangs getekende wettelijke documenten overhandigd volgens welke de Chileense regering de grond rond Cerro Armazones aan ESO zal overdragen. Cerro Armazones, een 3060 meter hoge bergtop op twintig kilometer afstand van ESO’s Very Large Telescope op Cerro Paranal, is de toekomstige thuisbasis van de European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT).
President Piñera werd op de Paranal Sterrenwacht ontvangen door ESO’s directeur-generaal, Tim de Zeeuw, de ESO-vertegenwoordiger in Chili, Fernando Comerón, en de plaatsvervangend directeur van de La Silla Paranal Sterrenwacht, Ueli Weilenmann. De president werd begeleid door de minister van buitenlandse zaken, Alfredo Moreno en vertegenwoordigers van de lokale Chileense autoriteiten.
Onderdeel van het bezoek was een rondleiding naar de top van Cerro Paranal, de thuisbasis van ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), de meest geavanceerde optische telescoop ter wereld. De president en minister Moreno bezochten ook de controleruimte van de VLT, die tevens zal dienen als het operationele hart van de toekomstige E-ELT.
Tijdens een ceremonie in de Paranal Residencia overhandigde president Piñera de publiekrechtelijke akte van overdracht van de grond rond Cerro Armazones aan de directeur-generaal van ESO.
Tijdens de ceremonie benadrukte de president het belang van de bescherming van het Noord-Chileense firmament. “Wij nemen een grote stap om de positie van Chili als astronomische hoofdstad van de wereld te versterken. De Extremely Large Telescope op Cerro Armazones zal het grootste oog op de hemel worden van de wereld, een oog dat naar de Chileense hemel zal turen en in de geheimen van het heelal zal duiken. Dit is een belangrijke dag voor de moderne sterrenkunde, en voor Chili."
De directeur-generaal van ESO betuigde zijn dankbaarheid aan de regering van Chili voor deze belangrijke mijlpaal: “De samenwerking tussen Chili en ESO, die vijftig jaar geleden is begonnen, is niet alleen heel vruchtbaar en bestendig gebleken, maar biedt ook spannende kansen voor de toekomst – ten voordele van Chili, van de ESO-lidstaten en van de vooruitgang van wetenschap en technologie. De E-ELT is het duidelijke bewijs daarvan.”
Volgens de publiekrechtelijke documenten zal de Chileense regering 189 vierkante kilometer grond rond Cerro Armazones overdragen voor de bouw van de E-ELT en het omringende gebied voor een periode van vijftig jaar in concessie geven. Dit grotere gebied van 362 vierkante kilometer zal de E-ELT beschermen tegen lichtvervuiling en de gevolgen van mijnbouwactiviteiten. Wanneer de E-ELT begin volgend decennium volledig operationeel is, zal de bediening ervan worden geïntegreerd met de ESO-sterrenwacht op Paranal.
De ceremonie volgt op een overeenkomst die in oktober 2011 werd getekend door het Chileens ministerie van buitenlandse zaken en ESO.

ESO is de belangrijkste intergouvernementele astronomische organisatie in Europa en de meest productieve sterrenwacht ter wereld. Zij wordt ondersteund door vijftien landen: België, Brazilië, Denemarken, Duitsland, Finland, Frankrijk, Italië, Nederland, Oostenrijk, Portugal, Spanje, Tsjechië, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Zweden en Zwitserland. ESO voert een ambitieus programma uit, gericht op het ontwerpen, bouwen en beheren van grote sterrenwachten die astronomen in staat stellen om belangrijke wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen te doen. Ook speelt ESO een leidende rol bij het bevorderen en organiseren van samenwerking op astronomisch gebied. ESO beheert drie waarnemingslocaties van wereldklasse in Chili: La Silla, Paranal en Chajnantor. Op Paranal staan ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), de meest geavanceerde optische sterrenwacht ter wereld, en twee surveytelescopen: VISTA werkt in het infrarood en is de grootste surveytelescoop ter wereld en de VLT Survey Telescope is de grootste telescoop die uitsluitend is ontworpen om de hemel in zichtbaar licht in kaart te brengen. ESO is ook de Europese partner van de revolutionaire telescoop ALMA, het grootste astronomische project van dit moment. Daarnaast bereidt ESO momenteel de bouw voor van de 39-meter Europese Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope (E-ELT), die ‘het grootste oog op de hemel’ ter wereld zal worden.
