ESOcast 88: Fulldome Specialists visit Chile

27 oktober 2016

In March 2016, the “Fulldome Expedition” gathered breathtaking visuals for the forthcoming ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre, which will open in late 2017 in Garching near Munich, Germany.

The team, composed of photographer Yuri Beletsky, ESO photo ambassadors Petr Horalek and Babak Tafreshi — accompanied by the pioneer of ultrafast planetarium cinematography, Theofanis Matsopoulos — ventured out to ESO’s world-leading observatories in Chile’s Atacama desert. This ESOcast tells the story of their visit and shares some of the remarkable images they brought back.

The Fulldome Expedition brought back a wide range of beautiful visuals, having captured thousands of stills and videos of the crystal clear Chilean night sky. Members of the public who come to ESO’s Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre will be able to enjoy the spoils of this venture for years to come.

As the world’s first open-source planetarium, all of the visuals obtained on this Expedition, along with many more materials from the ESO Supernova, are available to the public and fellow planetariums completely free.

You can subscribe to the ESOcasts in iTunes, receive future episodes on YouTube or follow us on Vimeo.

Many other ESOcast episodes are also available.
